Landed a local Class B dump truck job. Wondering if experience is good for future class B jobs?

Was with TMC transportation for 1 month driving before I called it quits. I simply put didn’t enjoy rolling tarps and the OTR lifestyle. I noticed I wanted to be home every night. I spoke with my training coordinator and we had no issues whats so ever when I left.

I realized you have to sell your life away to make that $60-100 thousand a year at TMC. I drove a automatic while there.

Well, screw that. Not for me. So I came home and went local. I didn’t think I would land a job so soon like literally two weeks later a local company hired me on driving a dump truck Class B. Mostly Stones, asphalt, dirt, and such. No experience. $20 an hour and about 46-47 hours a week with weekends off. I’ll tell you this I am shocked they gave me a chance. Started me at 18 an hour for one month and gave me my $20 after working there and doing good after the month was up.

I’ve always came into trucking with the goal I needed to average $45-50 thousand a year annually. So this is the perfect job right now especially with weekends off. At TMC one day and a half was just not my cup of tea. Especially when my girl lives two hours away from my place.

So my question is With me driving dump truck I’m seeing lots of Class B jobs in my area hiring with a lot more pay. Like between 22-26 an hour with tons of overtime. The issue is they want 1-2 years of experience. Most are hazmat and tankers or other positions.

So my question is I plan to stay with this company for 1-2 years and apply for the better jobs later. Will dump truck class B driving allow me to go into any and all Class B jobs after I put my years in. Driving a 9 speed manual and I love it.

I only ask because I want to definitely gain the right experience. Dump truck is sweet right now but if I can make more doing hazmat I’ll start looking for a hazmat gig 6 months from now locally. A guy was going to hire me but I didn’t have my hazmat at the time. It was Class B. Advice appreciated.

I would sure think that doing class B local work would count for another class B local job.

If you like what you’re currently doing I’d stay there just to show a stable work history. That will make you look better for when you want to advance to a better paying position later on.

If you are being paid 20 a hour a potentially overtime after 40 have at it. You should be ok.

Build savings no matter what each week.

driving a triaxle dump truck takes skill believe it or not. You are doing the right thing. You are carrying 24 tons right on top your frame right behind the cab. Not displaced over a 53 foot trailer. Why would you not think that driving that beast wouldnt qualify you for ANY class b driving job??????

Dump trucks can pull trailers too...

Look into working your way into operating heavy equipment. Pays better than trucking and I’m sure you’ll meet some guys who can help you out along the way.

you’ll need your cdl anyways more than likely.
