At $30/hr I'll come run a truck for the OP. Fyi op trucks get their best fuel mileage at 58mph. So umm I can knock out that round trip in about 60hrs. Sound good boss?

. That’s funny!!! I’ll do it for $28 an hr @ 62 mph, guaranteed same mpg using my foot instead of cruise. Lol. The problem I see with the whole idea is, all the time and effort involved in running a Truck, will take away from the time needed to run the core Bussiness. It might be different if you had some materials coming in, that you could also cover yourself to Utilize the equipment. I haul for a Company that dies just that. They run 10 Trucks in a 400 mile radius, delivering their products, near their Suppliers, and haul raw supplies back. It works great for them. Everything else gets brokered out, because it’s much cheaper, and orders are sporadic. I doubt it’s worth the trouble, not to mention the Liability, that alone is enough to deter any successful Bussiness. A whole separate Trucking Company would be a better alternative, with its own pockets. Ran by someone else, handling your freight when needed. If you decide to do it, expect to be woke up in the middle of the night, and a lot of other unwanted problems thrown in your lap. Sounds like one big PITA. Hardly worth it, when all is considered. You haven’t even considered the costs of equipment, whether leased or purchased, The actual costs are a lot more, than you think.

Thats how a lot of companies do it. Company A builds the product, company B hauls the product ad charges Co A a set amount to cover all expenses, plus a small profit, then company A is able to use that as a cost of business which Im sure is a used as a way to reduce tax liability.

Just curious.. If you bought one tractor and hired a driver, could you cover all the loads? IMO, one truck grossing 400k a year could be highly profitable..

The truck wont gross 400k. The point of buying a truck to ship their equipment is to reduce the outlay of 400k in shipping costs.

If I had to guess, I would say they might save 50k a year in the 1st few years in costs, but the added complexities of operating that truck will quickly make that savings seem not as attractive.

I may have misunderstood the OP. I was under the impression that he wanted to buy a truck separate from his employer and cash in on the shipping.

"I guess my question for you experts is am i crazy for looking at this as a possibility to make a little extra money with this."

I can see where the OP is going with this, but . .

@brian991219 has about the best summary.

Yes, you’re leaving dollars on the table.

But - when you pick up the extra dollars, you get these mysterious headaches that Tylenol won’t cure.

I’d entertain talks with a small platform carrier in your 20, that can provide capacity when needed - as you already know your costs from prior moves.

Best way for this guy to cash in on this would be to have his wife or trusted relative get broker authority and bid each job a few bucks below the other brokers.
