    I get the sentiment, but keep in mind that there are a lot of jobs where a guy might have to buy his own tools.

    Case in point, most mechanics have to have their own tools. I also understand your argument and I am sure a lot of employers are tired of their drivers losing their $250 pallet jacks. But my thoughts are that you can do the job without a pallet jack. You can break things down and or have customers tailgate the freight for you.

    Pallet jacks don't just make things easier on the driver, it will also make you much more productive. The more productive I am the more my company generates in revenue. If you want me to be more productive, then that ball should fall in the companies court and not mine.

    The whole topic is similar to the debate we had on wether or not the company should provide us with phones. But that's another long rant in itself.

    Good point @ChaoSS I used to be a wrench and have over $200,000 in tools. 2,500-3,000 doesn't seem so bad when you look at it that way.

    I'll also add that it is much easier to make more money driving a truck than swinging wrenches. The only time I ever made more was when I owned my own shop but that also had a lot of baggage that went along with owning a business, can't just punch out and leave the problems at work.

    To me the important part is compensation. If I have to buy my own stuff the job better be paying well enough to make it worth my while.

    I feel the same way but I went and bought my own pallet jack last year. It was one of the best investments I have made, no more hunting down one that works and I can do the maintenance on it myself. One thing a few guys have done at my center is contacted the crown dealer we get our jacks from and bought a refurbished one cost them around $170 for one that looks brand new.

    If I had the option to buy my own for 170, or even a few hundred,or use a beat up company derelict, I wouldn't even think twice.

    I haven't seen anything on here on this topic that is wrong or that I even disagree with. I guess I am just so used to always having access to tools everywhere I worked. So now I am shocked and clutching my pearls when I am expected to buy my own pallet jack.

    Well, rant for today is short in the sense that it has to do with not being called back to work yet.
    Got layed off about a month or so ago and was told I'd be called back once things pick up. Guess things are still slow.
    I guess this is one of the crappy parts of being low on the seniority pole right?

    I feel ya but not your pain (yet). I got laid off last Friday but I was told that they would still work me. I lost my bid and switched to extra board. Oddly enough, I've been getting earlier start times, and with that more hours.
