A driver got jacked and killed in his truck at the old Bunge oil plant (the cooking oil place) around 1990. The old hands told me to, when staying in a rough area, lower the landing gear and pull the 5th wheel, and if at all possible back up to a wall.
Things were different in those days, because when stuck at a place at night, if there were other trucks parked next to you, everyone kept their radios on. And everyone I knew was packing.
Saw a perp get killed at Port Canaveral. Trying to steal something off a lowboy. Middle of the night, “Lowboy, got it on? You got someone on the back of your trailer.” BLAM!
In those days before cellphones and power steering, a trucker was a tough guy. Real tough. Rough life. Run 5000 miles during the week and Mama was at the yard waiting for you Friday afternoon. Life expectancy was a lot lower, sure, it normally is when you’re living a rough life.
The biggest difference between back then and nowadays is, those old school hands had your back, whether you asked or not. It was automatic. Nowadays, if you’re gonna get jacked, it can happen broad day light and the other drivers will just sit there and film you getting beaten or killed just to have something to post on facebook.
Had someone ask me to define a sidewalk sissy. I pointed to the movie Deliverance, in the old ‘squeal like a pig’ sequence...ol Ned voluntarily took his pants off.
“But Six, the guy had a gun!”
And? After a couple episodes of pig squealing the plan was to kill him anyways. Enjoy your beef injections. -
I remember when my brother use to run in the late 90’s to the early 00’s he never left home without his snub nose .38 and He had to brandish it once in Florida too.
#### happens on the road, last year when he was back in the game for a short time before I took over he made a wrong turn bob tail and had 3 hoods coming up to his truck asking what’s he doing in their hood, they didn’t like the fact they saw a shiny tip of a Dirty Harry. They understood what he is doing.Last edited: Dec 12, 2019

I love the wild wild west stories.

I was in eagle pass texas back in the late 80's . I stopped at a red light & a Spanish guy jumped in my spare tire carrier on the dry van.
I drove about a block & made a right into the receiver's yard to unload. He was gone as soon as I stopped. Bet that was the shortest ride in history. LolPE_T, D.Tibbitt and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
I spent the night at a little mom&pop truck stop in Louisiana just a few months ago and someone stole the mud flaps off my tractor while I was in it sleeping.
PE_T, D.Tibbitt, FlaSwampRat and 1 other person Thank this. -
I think you're right but, would like to offer a modification. "HR used to have truckers' backs."
Management changed rules/road rules to suit their metrics. Help was an understood thing.
Now it ####s up Ted's bonus, which he needs to pay back his tier-3 state school business school loan that he used to leverage himself up into the incredible career of dispatching. Ted is 22 and actually thinks dispatch is in management.
If you blow his schedule, he has to explain to Sherri - who has three kids, 5 cats, 1 major case of diabetes or "chronic pain", 0 husbands, and blue hair - in HR why his on-time metrics dropped from 99.9% to 99.88%.
If he doesn't throw you under the bus he won't be able to afford the payment on his 4 year old 3/4 ton Denali and new shoes for his girlfriend's kids from her first two marriages.
If you don't toe the line Juan, Jiang, Keneshia, or Muhammed are happy to take your job, and earn your company a tax break for being so progressive and "helping" "underserved" demos get into the workforce.
We aren't people, or even employees, anymore. We're a measure of labor output and profit, to be managed by much smarter and more experienced people like Ted and Sherri.SmallPackage, dunchues, lynchy and 5 others Thank this. -
Coming out of Hunts Point Market one night, someone opened my backdoor and grabbed a few pieces of my load. I had heard that story many times but never believed it...
Driving through Boston delivering my KFC, some guy on a bicycle grabbed onto one of the side door handles and hitched a ride...I was not pleased...PE_T and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
TripleSix and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

One "Oh Sh#t!" wipes out one thousand "Atta boy's!"
FlaSwampRat and TripleSix Thank this.
