I've been a fan of the Co-Pilot for Trucks app for several years now, but they recently sold to another company. The jury is still out, trying to determine if the app is worth it.

ALK (previous owners of Co-Pilot) made some changes last year I was not a fan of (customized speed on your profile routes, is but one example). I've lived with it and it works ok with my change from OTR to local driver, but I won't recommend the new app just yet.

My 3+ year old Rand McNally TND 730 served me well, despite a map update issue and a recurring problem with the power connector. I finally gave up on it recently, based on the connector issue.

I have tried a couple of phone based alternatives over the past month. One was a beta version of the app being built by TTR. It was not ready for primetime. I have mostly been using the trucking gps included with the paid version of Trucker Path. It is more capable, but still not as reliable as my old RN. It has routed me over bridges that couldn't take my weight. It has also produced some inexplicably complex routes between two points.

I think I am going to purchase a new standalone device from either Garmin or RN. I think they are most useful and the safest. Messing with a phone when faced with an unexpected traffic issue is not good

So far, the truckers app Co-pilot built in the Peterbilt, has been my secondary free app, Google. Google puts Co-Pilot to shame even though Google is not a trucking app. Co-pilot, even being a trucking app, still will send you over non trucking routes. Moral of the story, no trucking app is perfect. I would never pay for one. Use Google maps (Earth and street view) with paper atlas and common sense/eyes.

So many posts say to use non-truck GPS and common sense. What I would like to know is how one can make use of this method while heading down the wrong exit ramp or while being diverted from a road closure, etc... Things can not always be planned in advance and I want a system that will reroute (on a truck route!) in real time.

Always obey with your eyes first, secondary you can pre-plan questionable areas with google satellite and street views. Google maps will give you the best live view of questionable areas.

But once on local streets, Google Maps will not tell me which routes are truck restricted.

Use your eyes, always first, they will be posted. You could do a street view on maps if it was driven by Google with camera.

In my opinion Truck route map PAPER and shipper reciever phone number on top Google maps is best combination.
    That's what I m using from last 13 years.

This is the issue I'm having. I am "old school", I use paper maps, google maps (to scout out the area) and I mainly use a GPS to watch my speed, POIs, and last minute (sometimes, last second) changes in routing.

If google would develop a truckers APP (GPS ?) they could really crush all of the competitors. The MAIN problem is, they ARE NOT (at this moment) a "trucking" map. With routing for trucks and especially HAZMAT. In my new driving position, I do HAZMAT loads about 1/3 of the time. So reliable truck ROUTES are very important to me!!!

For Hazmats , go to hazmat site download the hazmath routing map and then open Google maps , you will find layer of red lines where hazmat is not allowed. Try . If u need website info let me know. Idea is to double check truck GPS.

All-American82 and Leviathan Tube Thank this.
