So I make $20 an hour driving a dump truck for a local company. Mostly dirt, stone, etc back and fourth maybe two or three drives a day.
Job is M-F with weekends off. About 40-55 hours a week.
I got another interview with a company but the position is residential waste driver. It pays $23 an hour and off Sat-Sun-Monday off. It’s a route position where if you don’t finish before the 10 hour mark you don’t get paid for anything over it. Also $1000 retention bonus for the first year.
With maybe occasional overtime on a Monday or Saturday. What’s it like day to day working residential waste driver?
At my current job I drive for maybe 3 hours and a half and I’m then outside all day helping out construction workers to shovel and lift stuff.
I guess I’m trying to figure out if this gig is worth the switch. I just landed this local gig two weeks ago. But the pay increase made me say yes in the interview without thinking.
What’s it like working as a residential waste driver?

My buddy's dad was a garbage man. Used to get all kinds of interesting finds on the route. Worked out well to since he was a horder.

Well you have said yes to them??

Is it a large company? Thinking they would have better benefits if so.

If you haven't yet, take a peek at their equipment.
If the trucks are treated like crap, so are the people.RockinChair and x1Heavy Thank this. -
garbage man job is picking up.....

you start early, like 2 AM, and work until your route is done, and if need be, YOU WILL do a partial other route IF that driver is out sick, or has lousy workers helping him.
many times, depending on where in the country you are, it WILL BE a union job (mine was) due to THAT city or town having union workers...there is no way around that requirement.
if a holiday falls during the week, guess what?
you get to work satrurdays, then have sunday off, then back to work on monday
the job may or may NOT pay more than what you are getting now.
the benefits may or may not be better than what you get paid now.
it is contractual work with the city/town for x number of years, and if there are problems, the city/town can break that contract, and you "might" be out of that job, or the new hauler may hire you on
how it worked for me was, i took my helpers to the start of my route, we collected garbage to capacity (or above) we had no on board scales..i'd drop them off at a place to get breakfast, and i'd go to the dump. then out of the dump, was my break time, then back to the route.
many of todays city garbage trucks have NO helpers, and the trucks have those extending arms, to pick up the garbage containers and dump them....
it's really not a bad job, once you get to know your route, you do it faster.
but of course, all sorts of bad weather, you are working, unless a real major storm comes, then the day off...but say :hello" to saturday work, and NO, it is NOT extra payx1Heavy Thanks this. -
