I got a 2008 T800 Kenworth with a 2007 CAT C15 and it will not stay running. On my way to the job site this morning the DPF light came on and shortly after the Amber check engine came on. This has happened before, so when I got the job I simply ran a regen and the dpf light shut off but the check engine stayed on. I got loaded and headed to the dump down the road. The dpf light started blinking and effectively “derated” the engine. I got to the dump and unloaded and pulled into the parking lot and ran another regen and the warning light came on and the motor soon after shutdown. I restarted it and the warning light stayed on and was dinging. I’m new to the dpf and after some googling I thought maybe the dpf was clogged, so I took it off and got picked up and took it home and cleaned it with an air hose. Not Ideal, but I just anted to get the truck back to the shop. I put the dpf back on and started the truck, the warning light was still on and dinging. Oil and coolant levels are fine. So, I was wondering if I have to reset the ECU to get it back running, or if anyone would have any idea of what’s going on with the warning light and truck? Or of any other possible solutions.

    Thanks

It could be a filter plug a bad pump bad sensor something in the tank plugging the pickup and many other things just a dpf light on does tell us much here

I know that wasn’t a very thorough explanation and it could be a number of things. I have to head there this morning and probably get it towed, but I’m gonna change the fuel filters because it was due for a service this weekend. I’ll more than likely have to get in touch with a mechanic, but I was just seeing if anyone had any similar problems. It should be noted that I was trying to save some money by doing it myself. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Unfortunately its not 1985 anymore. There are lists of codes a mile long that can trip a CEL.

Ain’t that the truth. I’ve had this truck about a year and this is the first problem I’ve had, got it with 670000 miles. It definitely isn’t the 86 Pete I was running before. Lots more power, but lots more do-dads and Knick-knacks that I need to learn about.

When it comes to Dpf system you have to get familiarize with the system you. You check engine light may identify a sensor in the system that is malfunction and would not allow the regen to complete. It may be an intermittent fault that cause that. What I suggest is have a mobile mechanic check for any fault codes and if its an intermittent fault to clear and perform a stationary regen. It's very hard to try doing it yourself without knowing what's going on..

You will need Cat ET to get rid of the derate/CEL. No other way to do it

C15 acert with dpf is probably the worst engine to have. The reason Caterpillar got out of the highway engine. Class action suit was settled a year ago. I got paid for the 2 trucks I owned with C15 acert with dpf. Got back about $10k settlement for both trucks. Not even close to what i have spent fixing them. 1 truck was sold to Mexican market. The other 1 got dpf deleted after sitting in yard for 2 years and finally the blood drawing madness stopped.

Both engine has cylinder head replaced. Turbo replaced few times. But the dpf ard head failures is like clockwork every 4 months.

As Pushbroom said, absolutely need ET to diagnose it. You cant clear an active code. If you did too many unsuccessful regen, get ready for a tow as it dont have 'shutdown override' to limpback a short distance to a shop or home.

It could be as simple as a fouled/worn spark plug for the ard head. Try not to idle the truck as much as you can. EPA07 engine regen are based on timer and miles.

Would be nice to see new Cat engines back on the roads again.

I used to be Cummins guy for years and still am but Cat is so addictive.

Unless someone threw Catnip at me?
