Train verses vehicle. Train will always win. Looks as if the train was able to roll the truck as there is very little damage to the locomotive

That front engine features about 4200 horses and weighs around 268000 pounds by itself. I did not see if there was a second engine teamed with the first as usually the case, if so we are dealing with around 8500 horsepower and half a million pounds plus of engine. Each of those superliners are probably in the region of 160,000 to 168,000 pounds. (Superliner and Superliner II generation car is around 7600 pounds heavier) So we are probably looking at a thousand tons of train. Not too shabby.

True, but those thousands of tons tend to scatter everywhere when they derail at high speeds after striking a vehicle such as the case here with Metro North in 2015.

    Yes if they derail.

Most people don't understand there is less than a inch holding all of that true on path in the wheels to rail interface.

When they derail it's a horrible mess. And they will first chance it gets.

From what I understand they chop power, run in the slack (Bunch cars against engine) take the smash with vehicle in tracks at crossing and then apply the overall big hole which is emergency braking The entire train will stop eventually.

Ive been around trains thanks to the parents all my life since my first trip on strasburg in Lancaster on the old 4-4-0 Pennsy that ran until early 80's when metal scans showed the steel getting too thin over the crown sheet and becoming unsafe. So it's across the street in the museum now permanently. Eventually later in childhood it became a way to keep off the streets in Baltimore and out of trouble more or less.

Ive a trip being planned to one of two steam and diesel railroads that provide instruction in the operation of that type of technology for a fee. So I am looking forward to it. Learning how to run them properly. Its more of a bucket list item than anything. However it may lead to opportunities we'll see how it goes.

A steam locomotive is something I always wanted to run. Ran more than my share of diesels

They just restored the big boy locomotive back to working conditions out in Cheyenne. Maybe steam might be on its way it back. They do have the power for modern freight tonnage.

They have the power but the issue is the weight of the locomotives (the trucks in particular) and the amount of force applied to the rails, especially in curves, which can fail and cause a derailment situation. Both GE and EMD implemented technology in their locomotive products to reduce the stress on the rails when the trains are negotiating curves, especially on their 6-axle locomotives-which are especially suspectible to derailments.
