Remove shift tower (not trans cover) and replace 3 shift detent springs. They may be weak enough to cause shifter rattle. And cheap if your wrong.

Never mind. Just seen that it rattles in neutral.

    Roadking96 Thanks this.

Broken spring in shift tower could cause a rattle.

    Roadking96 Thanks this.

All good points but do not go 100% by what scrap metal you find. Those transmissions have some big magnets in the bottom that catch a lot of stuff. Also I have seen bearings missing balls in Jurop compressions before. They were in an inclosed housing with no place to go. If they stop rolling must be able to skid on the next ball until it discinigreats.
Based upon the damage I have seen caused by drivers that thank the shifter is an arm rest: Your transmission will not take a whole lot of the bungy cord.
I how long will it last? For this you must consult to tootsie pop owl.
Get an experienced hand to check it out. I would hate for you to buy a transmission you may not based on what some guys thank on line. We cannot drive or hear it on the keyboard.
Maybe do like A Model said plus unhook the driveshaft. Does it still do that running it gear with no driveshaft?

    Roadking96 and spsauerland Thank this.

OEM has been out sourced to China now and not recommended for longevity.
Vibratech (who made all the OEM units till the engine makers out sourced to China ) is the way to go for a new dampener.
They can be bought thru Pittsburgh power among others.
Vibration dampeners don’t very often have catastrophic failures.
They fail slowly over time as the silicone liquid inside the dampener polymerizes and becomes hard like rubber and locks up the balance ring so it can’t turn.
When this happens it can cause harmonic vibrations thru out the engine and truck.
When I changed mine at 1,000,000 miles I cut in to the old one and the clear silicone was black and hard like rubber and the balance ring was locked in place and couldn’t turn.

Roadking96, spsauerland and BoxCarKidd Thank this.

Believe it or not I was quoted 850.00 for the OEM thru Freightliner.
I paid 516.00 for the USA made vibratech with shipping from a local parts vendor near me.
He obviously sourced it thru Pittsburgh power because it came in there packaging.
