That's very true, I used to haul mail part-time for extra money during the holidays. When general freight slows, the mail picks up so the contractors were always looking for extra hands during the holidays. Ditto for UPS seasonal feeder positions. Even in January, there's lots of return packages to process, so there's plenty of work.

That's a big advantage of local over OTR. When it slows OTR, you're sitting in a truckstop somewhere in the middle of nowhere waiting on loads. With local, there's opportunities for extra work from home you can do. These days, there's flexible gig jobs like Uber\Lyft, Amazon Flex, DoorDash, etc that can keep money rolling in until work picks up.

A lot of companies dramatically reduce their incoming and outgoing loads in the last couple weeks of the year. More than a two week stretch seems wrong though.

Another question I have for you. Were you polite, despite the problems? Did you fly off the hook and curse? Even if they screwed up, if you went ballistic on them, there's a good chance that they have simply decided you are not someone they want to work with.

BTW, Wally World just lowered its minimum experience req's from 2 years to 1 a couple months ago. Not sure if everyone is aware of that or not..

No slowdown where I work. Worked both Christmas Eve and New Year's which were paid at double time and a half. Worked last Saturday which paid overtime for all hours worked. I'm going to be working again this Saturday for the same OT pay. Maybe you should think about getting away from mileage pay and work by the hour? Works fine for me.

That depends on location. I see that you probably work in a good area like the oil fields are somewhere in the Midwest. I live in Nevada where there is not too much

No I work in the Los Angeles CA area pulling a tanker. I delivered to a cruise ship today in the LA harbor. 10.5 hours of work. It only took 45 minutes to unload. The rest of the time was spent sitting watching Youtube videos on my company phone. Yes I still have to work tomorrow at time and a half for about 10.5 hours. I hate to work on weekends! I give you 5 days a week and you give me Saturday and Sunday off. Now I find out that I have another ship to deliver to on Sunday! However, Sunday work pays double time for all hours worked. As much as I hate working the weekend, I volunteered to work. I don;t know how long it will take me to get unloaded but it doesn't really matter. I can't reload on a Sunday. I am going to come in for about 3 hours on Monday to reload my trailer for a delivery on Tuesday. It will take me about 3 hours to get my trailer loaded but I will be paid for 8 hours of work. I should be out of hours by Thursday giving my wife and I a nice 3 day weekend to go to our new retirement home in Bullhead City AZ. Did I mention that I am represented by the Teamsters Union? If not, I apologize.
