I'll Take 1979 over 2019 Anytime.. No question about it. People were "Real" then. Everythings Fake and a Lie today- Society are Sheep- And are nothing but in a hurry.

By the way, I used to get 5 course meals at shippers out in California. They had the best roach coaches in the country, food cooked to order. When they mean hot Mexican food, they weren't fooling around.brian991219 and stayinback Thank this. -

As I have stated many times on these boards and others like it. My father (as well as most other truckers I knew) took pills and sometime would run day and night until they dropped exhausted at home. I still think this lifestyle is the primary reason he died in 1997. My father was medically retired from WR Grace based in Greenville SC in 1992. I took him that day to clean out his tractor. Then we went and had lunch. I will never forget my father's attitude that day. This was in 1992, almost 28 years ago! He had already then become upset at how trucking had changed and was happy to be finally done with it.
1979 compared to 2019? Give me1959 or 1969, by 1979 Trucking was already well on it's way to hades!
The final nail, in my opinion, was the tracking. People think I am crazy. I still have a feeling in the future truckers will be wired up much like the astronauts are today, or totally replaced with A.I.
I will make this final point. I have seen a substantial change in this industry just in the last 4 or 5 years. I think every driver at some point is going to have to give up most all their privacy or leave the industry. I am also sure my father and all his generation of truckers are today spinning in their graves!plankton and EuropeanTrucker Thank this. -
How long has it been since you could park at the fuel island and go in for a bite to eat, while the attendant fueled it washed the windshields and checked the oil, then parked it for you.
How long has it been since you could tell them at the fuel desk, what time to send someone out to wake you up.
How long has it been since you could borrow the truck stop managers car to run in to town and take care of any business you needed to.
Not to mention drivers looking out for each other, and helping when one needed it.
Not everything was good or even better, but by and large it was a better lifestyle, and it was a lifestyle, not just a job until something else looked better.
Trucks are a lot more comfortable these days, practicay drive themself, see where this is going, they will eventually drive themself, or a lot of them will.
Lots of folks blame the small companies and OO's for driving the prices and wages down, I think totally different. Back when freight prices were up there and drivers pay was too, there was not much in the name of mega carriers, who can afford to run cheap because they have a couple of thousand trucks running any given day. The small companies and or oo's can not even think about competing with them on cheap freight, because they can't run on quantity like the megas do.Robsti43130, Numb and plankton Thank this.
