Hi everyone, I’m looking into buying my first Super 10 dump truck and starting my own business. I am looking at a 2013 and 2014 dump truck. I also plan on hiring a driver and broker. Any advice on hiring a driver or where to hire them from. I am located in Los Angeles and would like to know if I should start as an LLC? I also want to know on how to find jobs or hire a good broker in Los Angeles. I want to make sure I have consistent work. Also how much are people paying for a parking spot. Any advice is appreciated.
thank you

why buy a truck and put a driver in it if don't already know this business, do you need to show a loss ? This business is based on seniority and who you know and if your asking on hear you must not know anybody in this line of work. A good driver is hard to find especially if you can't keep them busy { seniority again } and a good driver knows how not to brake your truck the showing up on time and every day is a must. Find a good Broker first but remember you are you going to get work after all their trucks and all of the long time sub haulers are booked out. Engines in the 2014 era are problematic due to the smog requirements and the state is going to start mandatory smog test is the next few years so deleting will only be a short term fix. A parking spot usually costs about 200 to 300 a month but really depends on location just like any other property rental. a lot of trucks commute quite a distance to their job we have lots of guys from the LA area come south to San Diego to work as the pay is better and when I say LA I mean anything North of Camp Pendleton, also seems like a lot of trucks based out of the inland empire work in the La area and San Diego area.
You need to talk with drivers in the area you live or want to work, follow them to a job site bring a box of donuts and show up early you should be able to get some helpful info. We work the same jobs day after day so if they are loading today tomorrow is a good bet they will be there again.
Now for all this help come back and tell me how this working out for youCoffey and stillwurkin Thank this. -

I now will only buy a new truck that I spec I have Petes but the new trucks are KW T880 see sig pic basically the Petes can be the same but I hate dealing with Rush Truck. The cost of fixing a used truck can exceed the the payments on a new truck hell I make more money fixing my own than driving them. I have been in the dump business 30 years it is good now but when it slows down and it will, the BK's come in fast I have seen hundreds of small firms come and go. do you intend to actually drive and be apart of the industry or just run a truck until the slow down.buy as new a truck as you can afford and one built for the business not a road truck that has the wrong suspension, gear ratio, transmission ,wheelbase, box, ect you will never have the time or money to fix a truck spec that is wrong , you want to be the guy that never has to say my truck can't make it in or out of the job, you want to be better than the rest of the sub haulers in order to make it long term. Also this business is going to go through a big change look up AB 5 that was just signed into law I think it will be good for me but many think it is going to kill trucking in this state, it goes into effect jan 1 2020. I am set up as a full corporation but you should consult a good tax attorney it all depends on your long term goals.

If you have friends in the business, let them help you get started, let them front some money, help you get established and they can teach you along the way.
As for the llc thing, consult your insurance people to see where your risks are with that segment of the business, I think that is a very high risk segment and the llc won't help with liabilities.stillwurkin Thanks this. -
