Got unit coming in next week with a ambient air temp code coming up. Its a 2012 IH workstar with I believe to be maxxforce 13 engine. Just wondering where the ambient air temp sensor is located on these units to give me a starting point. Thanks.

These can be tricky. If the cluster displays outside temp, then the truck should have two sensors. They are the same, but the engine uses one and the cluster will use the other one. Typically the cluster sensor is located at the front of the truck, front cross member area or near the rad. The engine one is located usually along the left frame rail near the back of the cab. One weird problem MF13 will have is they will log code 171-2 for ambient air sensor does not agree with other temp sensors. At key on, the engine will see the engine temp sensors for oil and coolant are hot, but the ambient temp is cold and will log this code because the engine thinks it has been sitting for over 8 hours when it has not. This is because the SART module is not working. The sart module is the real time clock module the ecm uses to tell time. When the sart module is not working, the engine defaults to at least 10+ hours of shut down time in between key offs. So if a driver shuts the truck off to go for lunch and restarts 30 mins later the engine thinks it has been more than 10 hours. This code will get logged. When the sart module fails, the engine will not log a code, but the body controller does. If you have active code 524285-14 in the body controller, this should be diagnosed first.

Unfortunatly I do not have the code numbers at this time. We have installed what is called a geotab on our municipal fleet. It is a module that hooks into the data port and is a gps tracker/mapping device as well as collects driving habit info and engine code descriptions but does not give the code numbers. The code description is "ambient air temp sensor voltage above normal or shorted to high source" I am not sure if the cluster has a temp reading but I have a feeling it does. I guess first thing is to locate the sensors and go from there. Thanks heavyd.

Drivers side around the front bumper
And most also have one in the frame rail around drive axle area, one is used by ECM, and one is used by the body contoller
