I have been to one place where they actually took possession of my phone at the front gate and returned it to me when I left. It's rare so don't put too much into it. No big deal. They don't search your truck looking for electronics or anything, at least nowhere I've been does. But yes, it's best to keep your head in the game anyway and pay attention to the process that's going on outside.

    Bud A. Thanks this.

Actually, Colorado requires that you have chains between October and April, whether you're going to use them or not, regardless of weather.

I thought the law applies only to specific roadways. I70 yes, I25 no, as an example.

Thanks for a great perspective & some good local knowledge. I can say with confidence that I will not go over I-70 again during winter. My terminal is in Florida, I don't even think they have chains to issue & probably wouldn't be able to train me on how to apply them correctly, I'd have to get some at one of our northern terminals. I have chained many personal trucks that I owned through the years so I could probably figure it out but honestly, it's not worth it with a tanker. I'll take another route next time. I lived in Colorado for several years, a little town called Paonia, so I'm no stranger to the conditions I encountered but it's a whole different pucker factor when you weigh 78k! I believe that the safest place to be when I was going through was right there on the interstate. With the exception of Vail Pass, the roads were decent. On the east side it was clear and wet roads but snowing pretty good. The west side was white roads but CDOT had everything sanded pretty good. Vail Pass was just white roads & I was most concerned there. It was definitely a different world up there! That is where the two plows passed me and I fell in behind them, thank God for that, cleaner road and fresh sand. When I looked for anywhere to pull off, all I saw was deep, not plowed snow and I didn't care to stay up at elevation anyway. Lesson learned and a great life experience!

You could be right, but anyone going through CO would be wise to check.

I believe it's a state law that applies to all roadways. I saw the sign when I crossed into Colorado, it didn't say only on certain roadways. I rolled the dice on that one, won't do it again.

Some places, like Exxon/Mobil in Baytown, Tx, used to ask me if my phone had a camera. Like what phone doesn't anymore. If you said yes, they would take your phone til you came back out. I always told them I'd just lost my phone.

I have two phones with me at all times. The old style without camera which I will gladly give to security and my smart phone. No one takes my smart phone.
