Does this cover former or current mafia ties in waste disposal? There's still plenty of shady things.

I was going to talk about private waste hauling in NYC. Let me tell you this Republic and Waste Management do not operate in NYC. There is a reason for that. What I know from what I read was Waste Management wanted to get into NYC and one day one of the big wigs at that company found the head of a dead dog on his front door step. That's what I read, don't know how true it is, but they said on second thought we don't need that market.

Oh good so yours get beat up too. How many vac trucks are in your particular group?

I had always wondered how those things were kept from freezing in the winter. I know the newer vac trucks have a lot of bells and whistles on them.

Where I work some of our trucks (not mine) but some of them the cabs look like 3 homeless men were living in them. Ticks management off we have trucks go to the shop the company mechanic opens the door and a water fall of garbage falls out.

They try to keep our tractors for 10 years, let me say around the 10 year mark our tractors are pretty much shot, the DEF system by this time is totally malfunctioning all the time, constantly in the shop. One truck at my yard is a 10 year old unit that was previously maintained by a big name brand company that starts with a P and that thing is every other week in the shop for one reason or another. Then when it's at the shop they let someone else drive it one of our malfunctioning 10 year old trucks was at the shop and the shop was letting someone else drive it and I think that someone else tore the air lines off the truck twice in one day jack knifing around.

Do you have the same unit everyday or are you give a unit to drive based on what kind of job there is?

Like if it's a small job use the small truck but if it's a big huge mess you need to take the big truck.

I know that vacuum blower motors need to be oiled a lot or else the bearings start rubbing together and they go bad.

Were do all those tons of NYC refuse end up?

Landfills? Where? They'd have to be huge.......or do they still barge it out to the ocean for disposal?

Fresh Kills was the big landfill for NYC for many years it is now closed.

I think they do indeed do a lot of bargeing out and from there it goes anywhere. I know for a very short while DSNY actually a trucking operation where they were loading there own tractor trailers and driving from NYC to Maryland and dumping in a landfill in Maryland.

We have 13 trucks, but at any given moment we have about 8 running. Most of us are pretty neat and orderly and keep the cabs clean because we have to do anywhere from 8-16 hours in them.

We had two older trucks from 2010 or so, they only had EGR emission on them, no DEF. Everyone loved those trucks because they were powerful, never broke down, and simple controls to operate. Therefore they had a lot of miles on them, 140k or so which is a lot for a truck that lives in one borough. Runtime in hours, I shudder at the thought of it. My old dept had a new F550 powerstroke field truck, it had 87 drive hours on it and something like 650 idling hours after one year of use lol.

Well the oldest truck in our fleet got retired due to an oldtimer beating the #### out of it when it was overheating, and literally made the red check engine light come on and the truck shut itself off. It always pushed coolant after bring parked, had a feeling it had a head gasket that was starting to go. Well this oldtimer was pretty miserable about his life and had a ZFG attitude and destroyed one of the best trucks we had.

We rotate trucks, given we have more crews than vehicles, so at the beginning of the shift trucks get picked by seniority. Other depts the two man crews are assigned their own truck and you pretty much live out of that thing. Some crews are very neat, others are slobs. I wish we would have assigned trucks but due to the breaking down we never have enough. We also eat rear tires up frequently due to the scrub radius and tight turns we have to do, so a blowout on the highway isn't uncommon (were loaded to 63k gross sometimes) or tread depth being down.

Emission equipment comes and goes. Last year almost every truck had a CEL. A majority of them got the EGR valve and some sensors replaced, and all are great now. There was a lecturing to about not letting the trucks high idle when they were trying to self clean the DPFs (guys would just shut the truck off and eventually plug it), which cured a good portion of the issues.

I tried to upload a few pics but I think they are too big. What's the file limit?

So I was reading the City of Fairview Park, Ohio's 1999 Master Plan. In 1999 the city did there own rubbish collection and turns out my memory was pretty good. There trucks I remember looked shot and they were.

According to a consulting group the city had 70 tons or 140,000lbs of solid waste hauling capacity that's 6 trucks. Out of the 6 trucks, 1 was listed in good condition. 3 of them were listed in fair condition and 2 of them were listed in poor condition.

To replace all 6 trucks in 1999 the cost was $577,500 dollars.

To repair the trucks the cost was $30,000

Although I guess according to master plan surveys the cities in house garbage and recycling was rated pretty good it had a 90% on the quality survey. The leaf collection and snow removal (which snow removal hasn't even been an issue this winter it's been so mild.) was only rated at 74% especially the leaf removal and what's funny is the thing they did good which was trash and recycling they got rid of and the two things they were kind of bad at snow removal and leaf collection they kept ha-ha.

I'm not sure what the file size limit is I'm sorry. I know that's the thing about any kind of work truck in the city, the miles they drive are not all that high, but the idle time on the motor is through the roof. That engine hour meter keeps ticking up. The city garbage trucks were the same way miles not all that many probably less then 100,000 after 10-12 years of service, but idle hours through the roof, and that's all wear and tear. The motor has to power the PTO unit which powers all the cylinders, packing blade and ejector blade, that packer blade cycles all the time and the further along the route the more garbage the more the blade cycles the harder it has to work to pack the truck full.
