Grape vine didn't scare me. Never heard of it. Un till I did with 38k of Poland spring. Complety changed my view.
That last curve to the right. Where you slide left used to be fun, again un till I had 38 k of water.

Has anyone seen that cop at the bottom of the hill on the right ever pull anyone over. Or is he there for the body count

Try about 44K with the same bottled water!

CHP said they were cracking down on speeders on the Grapevine as of a few months ago.

40k loaded on the Grapevine is 6th or 7th gear with full jakes on. 8th gear and your riding brakes.

Put it in the right gear and work the jakes. There aint a hill on an interstate that u should have to be riding the breaks on a nice sunny day like that good grief

Weird, in my 23 years out here and all the time I spent pulling maxi flat in the Northwest and Western Canada I’ve never had my brakes stop working. “Lost my brakes” and “load shifted” are two of the sorriest excuses when it comes to driver error.

Not always. Could be mechanical problems. How many drivers inspect their brake components every day on their PTI. I noticed smoke coming out of the trailer wheel while stopping at the traffic light. Come to find out, one of the S cams was broken (one side of S had snapped). My car-hauler is 2 low to the ground to inspect brakes every day loaded. Besides these things could happen during the trip.

The truck in the video had smoke coming off his, so apparently they worked well enough to build heat. And if they would’ve been going down the hill at the proper speed they wouldn’t have been on their brakes anyway. And if they were going slower they would’ve been able to get slowed down if it truly was a mechanical error. People don’t respect the hills like they used to because the new engine brakes will hold the truck back better. And you’re right, people don’t look over their equipment. But equipment failure due to driver inattention is still driver error. On most trucks it’s not difficult to give everything a once over, and if you have discs just reach in and feel the pad and check the rotor to see if you have anything funky going on.

I had to run to Peterbilt last week for an air filter. They had a truck there that came in for a leaking wheel seal. Turns out it also needed new pads and rotors on both drive axles because he ran the pads down so much the rotors were destroyed from metal on metal contact. I suppose eventually his brakes would “fail” but it’s still the drivers fault.

I watched a set of shoes come off a trailer the other day that had lining left on them about 3 sheets of paper thick. Take that down a hill and there would be a whole lot more than smoke to worry about.

Lol yes. That video summed it up good. I needed that this morning. I'm good with 44k. Of liquids on that hill. Even in The right gear.
