For many years, in my younger days, I rebuilt engines, though they were gasoling engines, without knowing what a torque wrench was. I was self taught. I tightened things until it felt about right. That's all ever did.
I finally found out about torque wrenches and now I use them, but I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep if I only knew how much to torque and then how much to turn. The devil is in the details.

Torque wrench at harbour freight is $20.
1/2 in. Drive Click Type Torque WrenchDave_in_AZ and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I have a 1/2 in. drive torque wrench.
Half inch drive won't torque to 400 ft. lbs.
I need to find out how much torque with the half inch, then how many degrees to turn after that.Dave_in_AZ and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
The method I described is very accurate. Think about it for a moment. A certain number of degrees equals an exact distance, an exact amount of stretch. That does not hold true for ft. lbs. The only thing I lack is details. How much to torque and then how many degrees to turn.
And in this case 300 foot pounds is not enough. The torque spec is closer to 400.
But there is an alternative way of torquing the bolts. That is to torque them by degrees rather than by ft. lbs. It's accurate. All I need is the numbers.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -

I don’t a know lot about it, but my understanding, when doing the added degree on top of set torque, is like you said, to get proper stretch on bolts. Usually new bolts are recommended, at least on my flywheel it was. I know many don’t bother. But I went by the book. I think re-using bearing bolts is common, so I’m wondering if there’s any stretching of bolts involved, Another question for my Mechanic, tomorrow. He keeps stressing how everything inside is always torqued every time, that way it’s never an issue.

One thing I've learned over the years:
If the Holy Bible (the service manual) says to do it a certain way, follow its directions. We like to think we're smartener than the engineers but we really aren't.
Besides, a good 3/4 drive torque wrench is good to have for torquing wheels, u-bolts etc. Its an excellent investment IMO.spsauerland, jamespmack, Dave_in_AZ and 5 others Thank this. -
That settles it, I’m getting one !! Worth the peace of mind, to check wheels.

Sorry fellas, I’ve got to say, the fact that you’ve got 2 million miles on it is amazing, I’ve never heard of one with that many miles. You should call Detroit Diesel, they might give you a nice chunk of change for it. Lol. I remember when Cat Guys used to say the series 60 was a throw away engine. 2 million, WOW!!!
