Subtly longer start after fuel filter change

They are always like that and it is normal after filter change. Once you drive it 5 miles it will be fine.

 

not 5 miles... 100-200 miles.

 

everything is ok, don't worry
a) it's normal condition You need to drive 100-200 miles to have all air out of system.
b) after one week before starting the engine pump it by hand pump 10-15 times...
@QUALITYTRUCK mentioned above about building a priming pump. Use search button and find that thread. Make one for you and use it . Worth to have it.

 

OP btw if you have Davco filter on your truck you need to change main filters every 200k miles. the Davco filter must be 7 micron. Donaldson p/n P551011 or equivalent.

 

That's not been my experience on the new engines with the pressurizing port. One good pull does the trick. 200 miles seems a bit much to get air out of the system. Just got to put foot in the mofo.

 

Too add, and it's probably my tin foil hat, I think it's why so many premature fuel pump failures on the Dd15 occurred. I see Speedco even has a pressurizing machine. Two years ago they where pushing the plunger.
Pilot changed my filters awhile back and used a garden can, only problem was it was empty and filled my system with air. Been making a sewing machine noise ever since.
You know waaaaay more about these engines then I ever will. They are temperamental and truck stop clowns should be avoided in my experience.

 

a) not all air will come out by using pressurized priming machine.
b) garden can or priming machine there is no difference. At least 2.5-3 gallons of fuel must be primed. after that the driver starts the engine while helper continues priming. Stop priming when engine starts and runs 10-20 seconds.

 

Just as a point of reference, when you say it took longer to "turn over" you mean it took longer to fire or longer to start. When you say turn over you should mean the engine is physically turning, trying to start, starter is spinning the engine. If you tell someone your engine isn't turning over they will assume you have a starter or battery issue, when you really mean it won't fire which is a completely different scenario.

An engine can turn over but not start. But it can't start if it isn't turning over

 

Also this is why Detroit has issued a service bulletin to all dealers to not change the engine oil and the fuel filters at the same time. They were having engine damage and failures from the long cranking intervals with no oil pressure.

Always do your fuel and oil separate. after I do the fuel filters and Davco on our Star's and use the air primer, I still drive about 30 minutes before it start normal.
