Cummins Identifier

    I bought an old farm tractor with a military rebuilt Cummins engine in it. I am having difficulty figuring out what engine it is and am hoping someone can help me. It’s a V8 and someone hand wrote 903 on the manifold. It has a tag on the engine saying the serial number is 638655 and states it was rebuilt in 1990. Does that serial number belong to a 903 and if so what can you tell me about the engine?

    Would that be a Steiger or a Verseitle made in the 70,s or early 80's. Should be around 300 HP.

    It’s a 1975 Versatile which originally had a V 903.

    Thanks. Do you know what the BI stands for? Bi fuel? I’d also like to know the horsepower. In a service manual it lists three ratings each with a different RPM. Pleasure Boat 280 @ 3,000, Light Duty 245 @ 2,800 and Heavy Duty 206 @ 2,600. Does that mean all three are the same engine with the horsepower available at each of the RPM’s?

    I'd check the fuel pump for a data tag. It should be on the top of the pump. A fuel code will give more information.

    And the CPL number. Call your local pump shop. Maybe even Cummins.
