6X2 Lift axle on New Volvo

On the other side of the deal the fuel economy is fantastic. Tire wear is lot less on tag axle. No differ.ential means lighter truck if that's a concern

 

I have 365000 on mine 3 winters when the road gets bad i remember that i have a sleeper

 

One of those lift axles! I have spoken with a few guys that have them, owner operators, they hate them. Winter and rain... If you run the desert, probably not an issue, anywhere else, good luck.

Are you mostly on dry roads?

 

I'm running VNL 740 with a 6x2 lift axle. Wide base. Empty, it's a real detriment in icy conditions. Likes going side to side. Was in Tehachapi yesterday. Slippery because of all the snow and ice the Flying J.
Loaded they seem to do better. Ran across 97 in Oregon a few weeks back from Bend to Chemult was iced up pretty good. Just ran slow with most of the pressure on the back axle. I didn't get any slippage. The drive axle is rated at 23,000 pounds.

Now if you were to ask me if I'd buy a setup like this, I would say no. My boss has come to the same conclusion and is going away from it. Going back to 6x4. Juice isn't worth the squeeze.

 

What about rainy conditions?

 

Can save some tolls and fuel if the trailer is empty or light. I would want a true locker on the powered axle though. Have seen these before and thought it was a clever idea.

I hadn't had any problems in rain with the 6x2. I was running a lot of Louisiana to Tennessee in lots of rain. When I was living in Mississippi. So I've had a good deal of experience with rain. Since moving to New Mexico. I have last year and this years winter under my belt. No Bueno, on Ice and snow unloaded.
