Local jobs for cdl grad

I’m not from that area so I won’t do better than you at finding something. But as someone who also got my CDL myself and started off local, I’ll say it was a long process that I started before I even made the commitment to pay for school. I made sure I could find multiple jobs that would hire new grads before deciding to pay for it myself.

As a recent grad looking for local work in January, I'd say consider food service, as much as I wince to make the suggestion. Most food service companies will take a fresh grad. It's grueling work, but you'll get in and who knows, may even like it. Food service drivers are paid pretty well.

Look for Sysco, Performance Food Group, US Foods, Core Mark, Gordon Food Service, etc. Apply even if they have a 6mo experience requirement. Food service is always looking for drivers.

Also give beer/soda a shot. Soda is a fractured distribution market between Pepsi/Coke as well as the beer distributors, but like food service they are generally always looking for drivers.

I'd also suggest looking for Driver Apprentice positions with FedEx Freight to get you into the company, although, this time of year is not opportune to get into the major LTLs, and even if you do, you'll be going through a few lean months until April.

 

I think it's safe to say most the LTL carriers have there own dock to driver driver programs now, you already have a leg up because you attended a school and have your CDL, your only real challenge is the time of year like McUzi pointed out it's January, so some of the LTLs are struggling to keep their current employees (mainly extra board employees) working, I would still hit up the LTLs anyway, they may be able to squeeze you into a dock position for the time being and get you in truck come March when things pick up, if not the food and beverage suggestions are good ones, as far as I know food service and beverage never slow down, people are always stuffing their faces, drinking soda and beer year round.

How far are you willing to commute? I’m out of the RDU area but make 50+ runs a year to E. C. and OBX. Twice that if you count the Wilmington area. All I see in NE NC are log trucks and grain wagons. Are you close enough to commute to the Hampton roads area? I know US Foods comes out of Williamston to service obx. I think Performance has a lot in the Barco area where 158 turns towards E. C. If you’re further south, I think SEFL is in Kinston, R&L is in Wilson. I’ll try to remember more if I can.

 

That’s about a hour more or less from Norfolk or Emporia. Several otr companies in Emporia. Been a few years but I remember Grayson Mitchell, J. B. Hunt, Maverick, and Western Express. I think Grayson sold out to someone like PSC or PNC maybe. Either way, you can get some experience out of there. If you’ve got a TWIC, you can probably find something more local out of the port in Norfolk. I would definitely start by googling or indeed “trucking jobs in Emporia VA”. or Norfolk. Or Raleigh if you’re willing to commute. Of course if you go OTR, you’ll be bringing the truck home with you, commuting distance won’t matter.

 

Construction related, such as cement or concrete, dirt or bottom dumps. end dumps. Home Depot uses class a driver for home deliveries and such in some stores.
