I have no idea what has happened in the past 6 months, but now a loud truck, a reefer and those darn APU's start to run and I am awake and find it very difficult to go back to sleep. I have tried my own white noise, a radio, but after a while that wakes me up. I have tried earplugs, but with my TMJ pretty quickly they hurt terribly as well. Any ideas? I try to sleep at the well away from the road rest areas, but in the winter that may not be the best idea. What do you all do?

Try to work a lil harder and it takes the thinking out of it lol

I pulled refers with an apu. Slept like a baby with the vibration of them both running. It was relaxing.
It got so bad when I was on hometime I couldnt sleep without it. If reefer didnt kick on every hour hour and a half I woke up, including while at home. -
Get one of those metal fans from loves, Pilot , whatever. They made enough noise to be effective, but not intrusive. I am so used to them that I have a hard time sleeping without them

That's interesting. Usually a older engine at a high idle is a good Z generator.
You might want to visit doctor and explain about the noise affecting sleep. You could be having something going on inside that will need to be corrected in some way.
It took me months to get used to a quiet house when we finally stopped OTR.D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
If ear plugs don't work, you're screwed. I'm a very light sleeper, and earplugs saved the day, especially in hotels.

I had one on each side of me yesterday.
On my right was the high idle guy with the engine fan that kicks on and off every 30 seconds sounding like a turbo jet.
On the left was a 1954 Rattletrap WeKoolit reefer that cycled from hyper driver to super hyper drive continuously.
I "was" sleeping like a baby.
Once you hear it... you're up.MOBee, D.Tibbitt and snowlauncher Thank this. -
Instead of backing into a spot try nosing in. It's a lot quieter. But dont tell anyone. It's a secret.

But, in most parking spaces it leaves the tail of the trailer sticking way out hindering everyone else's movement.
Backing in allows that overhang to clear a curb.
No easy solution.
It's the nature of the beast.tscottme Thanks this. -
Nose in (make sure it’s a spot you can easily back out of) and take some Zzzzquil.

Search for "slim fit" and search for "sleep/rest" . The first link are soft, smooth, and you can adjust the comfort by inserting them less far into your ear or super quiet by inserting them until they touch your brain. One trick is roll them tight with your finger and them dip briefly into water or lick them to lube them.
The second link are blobs of sillicone you mold to your ears. They collect dirt from your fingers. Depending on how neat freak or germophobe you are they may be one time use or not.
I also accidentally learned that noise-canceling over-the-ear headphones are amazing. I'm parked next to a show-truck wannabe rumbling and hear virtually nothing. Too bad I sleep on my side.
Melatonin helps, but if you take a dose too high for you you will have nightmares. Just reduce your dose. 5mg and higher is easy to find but someone I know very well finds the 1-3mg dosecworks best for him. He also reports that Vicks ZZZquil (Nyquil without the cold medicine) works well.
Good luck.Doealex Thanks this.
