I got my CDL-A license this morning, with triples, tanker, and pending X-endorsement. It looks like the entire industry is on a hiring freeze for new drivers from Florida, with few exceptions.

Cypress Truck Lines wants me. R. E. West is looking to see if they have any flatbed positions out of Mobile, AL, and didn't turn me down flat. Schneider also wants me. Some others that I haven't spoken to yet are Stevens Transport, TransAm, US Express, Werner, Western Express, and Wiley Sanders, but I'm working my way down the list.

I have to say that Schneider is looking pretty good. According to their website, their vanload OTR program will run you an average of 2650 mi/wk at $0.46/mile and get you home every two weeks for three days (they guarantee 6 days per month). Combine that with a $2500 sign-on, tuition reimbursement of $200/mo, and an extra $0.04/mile safety and fuel bonus, it doesn't look bad at all, considering I have no experience and am being taught a new set of marketable skills.

    Also, no driver-facing cameras.

Schneider also has tanker positions available, but I get the impression from a few drivers on youtube and on this forum that the tanker division pays the worst, not the best.

I'll talk to the Schneider recruiter tomorrow at 10:00.

Please voice any strong opinions about Schneider one way or another.

Where are you located? @Chinatown can probably list some additional companies in your area.

    Congratulations on getting your CDL.
You can post your Schneider questions on the Schneider sub forum and get some answers.

Im always reading on here that tanker is a step above dry van and reefer. No lumpers or midnight deliveries, or docks to sit in for hours.

    Coffey Thanks this.

Dry van driver is low on the food chain. With heavy haul and step deck at the top and tanker somewhere in the middle.

It's not a bad place to start.

Whatever you do, DO NOT job hop for the first year.

    This will f you up.

Wherever you go, just stay there for a year. Keep your nose clean.

@otterinthewater did exactly 1 year at Western Express. Now he's doing just a smidge better.

Definitely a difference. The shipper/receivers are usually glad to see you pull in. Not to say no middle of the night deliveries but the majority of mine were daytime. And when I had to wait I got paid for it until I was done a leaving.

    rachi and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.
