are current production trucks really this badly built?

The newer trucks and transmissions are all built to maximize mpg and emissions.

Something had to give in order to get it, and that something was reliability.

Ain't no free lunch in engineering.

Maximum economy, emissions, and hauling bulk milk must not go together very well. This stuff is engineered with 80k max gross not 105k with a load that moves.

Kenworth left a brand new t800 daycab in our yard when they took one of the t880s in for service. It was a 18 speed manual with a 15 liter Cummings it was a gorgeous truck. I though my boss had bought the truck. I said to him that's a really nice truck you have..... Hint hint.... I'd love to drive it. He says it's not mine it's a dinosaur.... Maybe that's what he should be buying considering the weight we are hauling. My own boss is so convinced he will save in fuel, he might regret that decision. He will pay in downtime. Kenworth might fix these junkers under warranty but they do not provide replacement trucks.

Oh yes, I've seen forklift drivers do their share of damage too. How many times have you seen the forks make contact with the hinges of a door?

It's not just the forklift drivers. You can see a lot of damage done by yard drivers. I once watched such a guy backup under a """"still being unloaded trailer""" and leave the dock with the forklift still in it. Took about 10 seconds and I saw the guy inside jump out. To this day I don't know what kept that forklift inside. I also have seen yard drivers rip doors off. I guess the hardest I have ever laughed though was watching a yard driver roll a loaded trailer and himself. It was top-heavy and he took that sharp turn way to fast. Almost ripped the kingpin lift clean off in the process. I was one of the first ones there to help him. I swear that guys' first words were "I wish people would learn how to load a truck". I went back to that place about a month later. I asked about the guy, he had been fired!

Detroit DT-12 auto shift is a good transmission. When the engine and transmission can talk to each other they can do more things. I heard the new Eaton automatic is a good transmission not sure if that the one OP has.

Detroit will give you a warning if the clutch is getting hot. It's can apply the engine brake between gears. So it won't miss a gear. It has GPS location of the big hills and it can change the shift points if your pulling heave up a hill. It has a Descent Mode for going down big hills and it will hold the speed you set the truck at. The transmission is reliable

I only saw one engine issue, the rest I read were all related to the Eaton auto shift.

When wrench told me the controls for those are on top of the tranny, well, I think it could be awhile before I try one.
