We were hit by a derecho near Baltimore in the area of Landover off 29 once, ive had the pleasure of hiding in the nursery's concrete building waiting to see if the storm will tip the entire day cab and flatbed with load. A few times the wheels on each side cleared the ground a few feet and came back down.
I understand Baltimore pretty much had that one come straight down North Ave making trouble end to end that year.
Im just happy I never had to call anyone at the company and tell them the rig and load is totaled without me in it.G13Tomcat, Dave_in_AZ and LtlAnonymous Thank this. -
I had a monster lightning bolt come down next to me in Texas on 20 about 5 years ago.
I thought, "Well, at least it will be quick........."Snailexpress, bzinger, bryan21384 and 3 others Thank this. -
We were quietly talking next to a window in the living room above our Tavern in a storm one night. To understand the situation it's a 1930's built two story with ALL of the BIG service drops and Mains 10 feet aft from the living room window outside of the building to basement meters and mains box. These are like 440 volt service panels and several meters for the place.
Our world turned white as in absolute white no sound. When we got our eyes back we looked at one another and sure as *&^% for sure we got hit somewhere. Turned out a major bolt hit the mains and followed it straight to the basement mains panel box and exploded the entire thing. Half the room was on fire and trying to get to the racks of Kegs and towards the freezer on the opposite end.
Took fire about 15 minutes to get there via fumbled communications and local storm related emergencies but they put that out, gas company replaced everything and we were open two days later.
Ive been hit by lightning 4 times in my life, not direct hits but ground and side strikes within 5 yards. The last one was too close, we were sheltering in a garage away from my Mixer and two crew with me. The ground strike hit the two, the boss in particular fried his jewels for a while. Up a leg and down the other. I caught the rest of it.
I don't worry about it. But here in Arkansas you can hear thunder 30 miles in certain situations up there on the ridge.Dave_in_AZ and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
