Flying against the rotation of the earth must have played a part.

    Rotation is well known.

The problem with transatlantic flights is the Jet Stream. If your plane is doing say 580 mph in the air and you add a 200 mph jetstream going east where it's going, the plane is doing around maybe 380 in the air still within envelope of it's lifting power via the wings but the ground speed will be about 800 over the actual earth itself below. You will be in scotland afore me.

Now if you came west from London to USA, yoU AVOID the jetstream. Pilots check the weather and make very large adjustments to cross the ocean westbound without that Jetstream in the way.

When I went to London from Baltimore in our L1011 (Which was about half million pounds of emissions choked jet) we needed 9 hours and change to get there. Getting back required us to cut through the jetstream to Bermuda at 9 hours, refuel then another 5 to Baltimore. What a trip that was.

The Atlantic is seriously big. Ive seen all I want of it really from those very long plane trips. We did have the concordes then. It's about 3 hours to NYC on burner and very high. But tickets are like 5000 a soul in 80's money. Impossible today because its all burner.

We are developing planes that will potentially carry 200 people towards the edge of our space and be in Japan from DC in 2 hours. And another that will do supersonic via supercruise (Big ### engines that do not need burner to stay above speed of sound) without the sonic boom and be in Japan in 6 hours or UK in 2 from DC.

We have developed ultra long range planes that fly #### near 24 hours in the air, or about 12000 miles. The earth is about 25000 miles around give or take. So... Anyone wants to be squished into a coach seat for 48 hours 20 years from now can have at it. Its not for me.

If you go to 9:10 in this video you will find a impatient speedbird (British Airways call sign) pilot wanting out using short field take off process.

The engines he had on him were probably Rolls Royce Trents. And they were probably as big as you can put on a plane today and still have a wheel underneath to roll em off into the air. If those engines got much bigger (Big fan, crush lots of air, blow burning fuel through many small fans and go...) you will find these planes riding the mach .99

You need hearing protection for this one. The pilot apparently maxed out the engines to full power wanting out after waiting all that time for a little medevac bizjet holding him all that time.

If the Earth rotated, planes could not land. The plane would be attempting to land on a runway moving at speeds up to 1050 mph coupled with the air speed of the plane.

Also, a helicopter could not hover in place. Think about it.

So what causes night and day and the season's to change? If the earth doesnt rotate, does the magnetic field not exist, then is our observation of time and direction a lie? So many questions.

The helicopter hovers in the air. The air above the earth apparently moves at the same speed as the earth. You have to leave the earths atmosphere and enter the vacuum of space to notice the rotation of the earth but heres the real issue, how is flight in space possible? For an anything to take and maintain flight it has to push down on the air surrounding it. Once any vehicle leaves the atmosphere of the earth, How do they continue flying? Isn't space like a vacuum with no air?
