Another vote for Ask your local DMV - those hotshot rigs seem to be DOT magnets -

Arkansas has been cracking down on hotshots. People are hauled into court regularly for being out of license class. Required a CDL but have none at all.

This excludes farm work. Thats a real limited work.

You will find that anything under 18 you cannot enter into a contract anyway. So that's out. Now if you are set on playing with tonka trucks so to speak, join the military and tell them you wanna drive convoy trucks. And they will stick you on one soon enough.

Insurance will laugh. If you did do this and smashed up a school bus then hauled into court and learned you are too young to legally do anything like that on a public road? You are not going to be doing that again for a very long time if ever.

My position is based on anyone below 18 do not have full grown drivers license anything at the DMV much less trucking. Other than farm.

200 years ago 14 year olds were doing adult things considered unlawful today. There has been excessive regulation of the so called "Teenager" since about the 1941 era when that term was first used publicly iun writing to define those who are of age physically but still considered to be a minor child until 18, 21 or whatever.

This was the left over resulting change in our USA society when child labor was stopped or banned and the 8 hour work shift was implemented among other things.

Reduced to simple terms. The one thing a 17 year old can legally do in life in the USA is be trained with a rifle sent to war in our Military. Which is a horrible thing for some.

I started out driving a rollback 3 car/hauler at 18 years old 40 yr. ago and got popped at a NJ toll both by a state rev/new officer for no fuel sticker, but he walked around to back of truck and found a ga dealer tag bolted over the expired tag that my boss stuck on, came back around and said oh you are a dealer your exempt, I stopped at the big orange ball in the air to get a cup at drivers table this union driver says your real young to be driving up here to the port, a table full of drivers said i was lucky he did not ask for my D/L and told me i needed a log book and alot of other things to get in case i was stopped on way home so everything else looks good so they will not ask for D/L so many drivers were helpfull even back then?

CDL B is any straight truck over 26,000.
CDL A is any trailer over 10,000 pounds pulled by a truck that when added to the trailer, both exceed 26,000 pounds.

You cannot go out of state until 21.
You cannot haul any merchandise that originated out of state and you are the " middleman" moving it within your state.
You cannot haul any merchandise that is ultimately intended to go out of state even if your role is to move it to another city within your home state.
Some state start the definition of a CMV at any truck or combination that the registered weight added together exceeds 10,000 pounds. Some it is 17,000 pounds and some it is 18,000 pounds. Some it has to exceed 26,000 pounds which is CDL anyway. If you have what is a CMV , you will need a DOT medical card . pre trips , are subject yo the hours of service rules, roadside inspections but your biggest hurdle will be COMMERCIAL insurance and DOT authority.
