Companies that continually hire.

They're not hired until they're put on the payroll.

It's pretty common to bring in 30 at a time. By the time work comes around. There's usually less then 5 left waiting for that actual employment.

 

One company in Gettysburg I ran for hired me bottom man driver number 226 one October. The following spring I was driver number 38 or something. I forget. ALL the rest of then current 235 drivers were replacements in less than 6 months. WIth the EXCEPTION of the 25 top senior drivers who are either family or have been there forever.

So 234 drivers replaced, hired, fired, dismissed, injured etc in 6 months out of a 240 or so truck fleet in 6 months to keep them rolling Thats a total of about 460 people twice a year or almost a thousand annually.

Chew on that.

 

it's normal, as they weed out the ones that are just not up to being fully hired on.

then it's normal cuz many just drop out.

 

I heard this crap about tax breaks but I wish someone would post the actual IRS regulation or tax law that gives these tax breaks because I have two people who are involved with my finances who can not find any evidence of it.

Big companies do not value the time of truck drivers, especially new truck drivers. Many of the big trucking companies that hire newbies have a MAJORITY of their current truck drivers with less than 1 year experience. What would you think if many hospitals had the MAJORITY of their doctors with less than 1 year experience? If you hire on to a company that essentially hires anyone and everyone that applies and can pass a drug test expect to be treated like a piece of equipment.

Training drivers for most trainers at big companies is simply a way to make more money that being a driver. ANYONE that has enough time without accidents and agrees to take a stranger into the truck with them can be a trainer. Some companies HOPE the new driver will watch and learn enough about driving by watching the "trainer" that the new driver can be used as a solo driver. Some companies have detailed and careful program to train and evaluate who will become a company trainer. Many other companies use anyone that agrees to be a trainer as a trainer.

ALL OF YOUR POWER is to be used before you start working at a company. If you choose to work at a company before you know enough about them you have chosen poorly. My rule is NEVER work for a company until you have spoken to current drivers at that company doing the work you are being hired to do. Web pages and recommendations and emails from recruiters is not enough information.

 

Your professional tax people are probably not looking in "The Truck Stop Guide to Tax Laws" published every year by Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe

 

@Snow Hater it takes about two weeks to get an OTR trainer for FFE. Unfortunately it is the company's slow period. From late Dec / early Jan to mid March loads are slower to come by.

 

And when I was approved to be a trainer, I needed 7 departmental supervisors company wide to sign each of the seven on those 7 lines before I was told to go get my spouse and get her to orientation. They were in those days pretty... particular.

You know what the lead female company drone told me? They had plotted to make a trainer out of my spouse as well within the year. 150-200K income to the house. I told her thats up to the spouse.

No.

Well thats the end of that question. Its not a bad company, just a particular DM who turned out to be a embezzler within their system. Hes serving out 20 years in Mississippi now. Which for him is a life sentence at this point. All in all if you had two weeks before a trainer, fly home and enjoy this time resting up. It will be a while before you go by there again.
