So, let's say I had a fully paid for daycab and I would like to stay local, running in between these three ports. What companies would I be able to lease on to? Is there a need for local only O/O in this area? I am tired of the road and trying to figure out how to be home daily and still make good money.
And yes, I know all the horror stories of lease operators. But keep in mind that the truck will be fully paid for. Would that give me an advantage?
    Brainstorming here.

    @Chinatown

IF you are down that way I see pipe. LOTS of pipe. Those rigs cry for pipe. Mountains of pipe....

(*Sotto voce, Im actually sick of pipe but don't tell anyone that down that way.)

Well, I live in south Mississippi and there's really not a lot of oilfield activity around here. I would rather work ports, road construction or anything else local. 13 years pulling hazmat and tankers is what I have to offer. I am brainstorming at this point. Have the money for a good daycab. But then what?

The main thing is you pay cash for a tractor all up.

Why not spend a couple more thousand and have a tiny sleeper on there. Maybe a 48 inch which is really small back there. Just meant to provide you with a workaround in case you got trapped waiting somewhere very long in the ports. Thats my thought.

I cannot risk going into port with a small daycab without a small sleeper on there. There is some times that you lose all day for one reason or another and need to have something other than a hammock between your catwalk and nearest pole or tree.

Why not try, Dupre, Frisards, Meyers, Winn Dixie, as a Local Driver? Containers are slow, right now, but I see a lot of Local O/Os doing that. I think the quad axle dumps may be the way to go, or hot shot, as an O/O. Never know, things seem to change quick. Boom or bust. But I see pipe fields are full, and adding more. Looks to Me like it’s going to keep cranking along for a while. Price of oil spikes, which it always does. And it gets real Lucrative. If I lived in your area, as I have in the past. I’d get a Local Job at Estes, Old Dominion, or Southeastern. Steady work, good pay, without all the uncertainty. Lots of opportunities near You for good Drivers. Got to get out and find them, through talking to other Locals.

I have to agree with the thought of having a sleeper.

It's just nice having more room and be able to take a nap when you're delayed and most importantly if your plans change and you have to go a little bit farther you won't have to get a motel room or sleep on a board Between the seats.

You may stay local 99% of the time but every now and then find a grand slam that's just a little bit farther... the sleeper would help.

Gulf States Intermodal runs those ports, gotta have tank, twic and haz, they used to take daycabs and sleepers.
Used to out of rails it paid $170-185 your part with fsc for 30-45 mile round trip, depending on which rail, detention after 2 hours was $35.
If you did get stuck at a customer and had to stay overnight(motel for daycabs of course) it paid $35/hour detention after two hours then $200 your part for overnight.
    Their HQ is Chalmette

Easy money if you don't mind working vampire hours even with just a day cab. Give Cardinal Logistics a call. They cover the in house moves for AWG in Pearl River.

About the only thing you are going to find running a day cab down here is going to be logging or dump trailer possibly. I do have a buddy here in the Pensacola area that runs flatbed pulling for a local lumber company. he started with a day cab but now has a coffin sleeper but really doesn't need it since he is home every night.

I believe it’s Gulf Container Services. Few of my friends left landstar to haul containers. Mobile to loxley or Mobile to Irvington. They claim 2500 a week. 88-94000 one way. Empty back to port.

Pipe loads aren’t worth the trouble. At least that was my opinion. Did enough to see there’s too little money in it. 700$ on a 3 stop to north Alabama direct from the mill.

Lumber they would love you. About the only thing we fool with when it’s time to drag rags.

Otherwise check out Boasso in Prichard (x19 behind the loves/Pilot off 65). Twic and Hazmat but Danielle will keep you busy and there’s money to be made. Consistent work.
