For those familiar with the Nashville area, where is the best suburb or nearby city that has a low cost of living and a very large number of local trucking companies to choose from? I'm not sure what to expect from local work, so it would be nice to get setup in a town with lots of companies to choose from in case things don't work out with the first option.

I'm considering a move to local work, mainly because I'm interested in having a normal life again. Not too crazy about driving in the city of Nashville everyday, so if you could recommend something out and back that would be nice. Dayshift please. My address is a family member's house, so I could move elsewhere, but don't really want to go out of state.

Not exactly close but why not Decatur, Alabama? Lots of plants along the river there.

Rent and home prices are already double what they were 20 years ago. One reason I don't move from the Nashville area is my 3 bedroom house with garage is just over half the cost of renting a 1 bedroom apartment in the same area. 1 bedroom apartments are going to be in the $1,000/mo and up range, mostly $12-1300. No income tax, 9.75% sales tax

Smyrna and La Vergne (lah vern) have tons of trucking companies and are both more industrial than say Lebanon, Murfreesboro, Clarksville. If at all possible you want to live on the same side of Nahsville as your trucking company yard. You do not want to live west of Nashville and work East of Nashville so that your commute goes through Nashville. Search in all the cities I mentioned and 30-50 miles from them.

Also look in Manchester, Portland, Springfield. You can probably start now with Venture Express in Smyrna. They took over the Nissan account from Averitt Express and have tons of home daily jobs because of it. You would work out of Smyrna. I would warn you to stay away from Central Transport and Universal in Smyrna.

If you have a tanker endorsement & HazMat a friend of mine has a home daily tanker job. It's all drop & hook. The yard is at the junction of I-40 & Briley Parkway on west side of Nashville. $23/hour with OT after 40. BCBS benefits.
