It’s a common problem, as you now know. I doubt it will hurt anything. Detroit knows about it, but pretends they don’t. They even had a settlement with the epa to fix a certain amount of them, after it became a problem. It’s from the Lo nox programming

I run a 12.7 60 series and it does the same thing. I've had it start and it will have a cloud over the lot. It clears up and stops smoking. Probably around 250k on the overhaul and it did this since it was rebuilt. (Not sure if before that because I got the truck in the summer and it conveniently needed overhauled 2 months later.) Keep us posted.
Rideandrepair and valerchekk Thank this. -
I really hope that the issue is just software related. In case if its not, I don't know...I really hate to do another overhaul again, but if I have to, I'm going to try to do it right this time.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I don’t know for sure, but you may get away with changing pistons only. If You have floating wrist pin rods. If You have the bolted type, you may need rods also. I may be wrong, but I think the 16.5:1 pistons all are floating wrist pin design. Ive heard on here, that rods with a drilled oil passageway are available for 12.7s. That would be a nice upgrade, if buying rods anyways. You may be able to use your cam, injectors and Jakes. Injectors and Jakes are matched depending on injector height. Cam is preference. That’s what I’ve read anyways. There’s others on here, that know the numbers real well, and what will work.Just my thoughts.Pistons only can be bought, no need to get whole kit. Check out Mahle aftermarket pistons, original Detroit Piston Manufacturer.

I just found a random BK engine serial number (Feb. 1999) and compared the part numbers with my engine's serial (PK, June 1998). Here is the only differences I can see:
- Camshaft: PK# R23521681, BK# R23524292
- Cylinder kit: PK# R23533204 (15:1 compression ratio) , BK# R23532554 (16.5:1 compression ratio)
Same injectors R5237650/7466, even the piston rods are the same R23526078, although in the description for PK it says "non-drilled", same liners 23531502 (the description for liners says "Mahle" I'm assuming they are the manufacturer). Couldn't find any info on Jakes, since the numbers are missing in the catalog for both of these engines.
So it looks like the difference between PK and BK is very minimal: camshaft, pistons and maybe Jakes. Have to do more research on this subject. I might as well just drop in these https://catalog.mahle-aftermarket.com/na/product.xhtml?eid=1645451#divider Mahle pistons along with ECM flash.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
