    Hi,

I'm not a trucker, but could really use some advice from one. My mother is moving from Cleveland, OH to Philadelphia, PA and is driving a 26' U-Haul with a 7' trailer attached. She's driven RV's a couple of times in the past, but never anything this big.

My question is, should she take Route 80 or the PA turnpike (76)? They're about the same length, but I'm not sure if one is easier than the other with a big truck. Please let me know what you think, and if you have any tips for her on how to handle the truck and trailer.

    Thanks!!!

Turnpike. Avoid non interstates at all costs. Non interstate routes will get very tricky for a big truck in pennsylvania, and are usually confusing to follow anyway.

Expect around $20 to $40 in total tolls. But its better than being cheap and having an accident. Be careful at toll booths, theyre easy to wreck a trailer into.

Im in pennsylvania RIGHT NOW. :D

Turnpike is better because there are service plazas (food and fuel and restrooms) right along the roadway. Much better for a large vehicle novice, than getting off in strange towns and finding your way around and having to figure out how to get back to the interstate. You know I'm right. Tell her also to NOT be a hotrodder while pulling the trailer. Seen so many U-haul jocks cooking along at 70 mph and they lose control unexpectidly and their belongings are all over the interstate.

As already mentioned, avoid the secondary roads - even US 322 getting across the state.

Your two options are I76 the entire way or I80 to I476. Either way is about the same. I80 is a little straighter and less congested than the PATP - I would go this way all things being equal.

If any snow is expected definitely take I76 though - generally the weather is a little better down there and they do a much better job with salt and snow removal on the Pike. I80 is a bad road in inclement weather.

If the weather is going to be ok with NO SNOW/Ice take I80 to 476. Its 450 miles that way and 422 going I76 with the tolls but be sure to check the prices for the toll roads!
