hi when you go out with a trainer are the trucks 10 spd or 13? I could drive a 10 never drove a 13. If I do get a 13 can we drive it as a 8 or 9 speed without the shifter? like just skip the shifter and drive in lower gear? how fast can it go MPH wise without the shifter?
10 speed or 13 speed truck when training?

i, too, was apprehensive about 13 speed after having driven straight 10 for a few years. but trust me, you will pick it up in very little time and once you learn it you will never want to go back to 10. 13 is actually much easier, the splitter means u only have to shift every other gear. takes a couple hours for someone familiar with 10 to be pretty comfortable with 13, and in 3 days youll be a convert, never wanting to see a straight 10 again.
starsonwindow Thanks this. -
Tend to agree on the 13, and it just makes an 18spd that much easier to handle.
Regardless of the trans used, remember to stay totally off the jake in the winter, except on completely ice and snow free pavement.. -
I love the 13 I have sometimes..coming up to a hill I can drop a half step instead of shifting. Absolutely love it

Most companies that have trainers dont run 13s...so odds are you will be in a 10. Unless, the trainer is an O/O.

10 speeds or 9 speeds IMHO.. there should be a 13 speed on had at the school to show how they operate but stick to the simple when training.

I would not try to split gears until I was comfy with a 9, there is really no need unless you are loaded.
Note - some 13's don't shift right if you preselect and will give you fits until you figure out how to time your shift. (hopefully you get one that shifts right)
Every truck drives different.... -
if you can drive a 10 speed you can drive a 9 speed, if you can drive a 9 speed you can drive a 13 if you can drive a 13 you can drive a 18. 9's 13's and 18's all basically use the same main box with different aux's you can drive a 18 just like a 9 if you want leave the splitter in the high split all the time, a 13 you will need to be in the low split to be in the low side of the box so shift to the 9th hole then split to 13th coming back down split low when you select the low side of the box. after you get used to it you will hate anything less than a 13. I drive a 18 speed. somtimes 13's will make me think for a split second when the splitter or the range selector wont move (it locks out the high split in low range) then you realize in 1/2 a second your in a 13 not a 18.
basically in short just run the `13 as a 9 till you get used to it then your love it. nothing to get flustered over -
so if its a 13 just leave the selector switch up when i hit 5th gear ad shift it like a 9.
