Hey all,
Having some fuel pressure issues, fuel pressure yesterday started jumping around all over the place between 50 and 90 psi. Normally runs around 80 psi going down the highway. Fuel pressure at high idle runs around 40psi, at idle fuel pressure will drop to 20-25psi then chokes off and dies. Tried running several times and each time I opened the filter after the pump and it was empty and had a little air pressure when I’d take it off. All fuel lines are new as of this fall, with steal braided teflon lines so I don’t think fuel lines are an issue. Wondering if the air compressor could possibly have blown a seal in the pump and be pressurizing the fuel system? Took the pump off and put my fingers over both ports and don’t get much if any suction doing that. Any ideas on what to try? Have a new fuel pump coming tomorrow.

I think you've ruled everything out but the pump. Ill bet when it arrives, it'll start working right again.

I've had one that The High Pressure Fuel Pump Grenaded. Tech replaced 6 injectors, Fuel Filter Housing, High Pressure Fuel Pump and claimed he cleaned all the lines, cleaned the Fuel rail, and cleaned the metal out of the Fuel Tanks. Apparently he didn't, 6 days later the truck came back with low fuel pressure and the filters kept draining. The small catch fuel filter was back full with metal. The tanks were full of metal and so were the lines. $10,000 later we replaced the same components he replaced and I made sure to clean out all the metal. Trucks been running strong for 2 months now, no problems. This may not be your problem. But just a heads up, Detroit fuel systems will throw you in a loop

Thanks for the info. Learned a lot about how picky they are on fuel last year after I got some nasty bio diesel(on accident) and then the truck sat for a week when it was really hot out.
Anyway, hoping it’s the pump. I’d been hearing a high pitch whine the last couple days almost like the fan kicking on but probably half as loud as that. Thought about maybe an injector o ring pushing air but I don’t know how that would suck all the fuel out of the filter and fill it with air -
That's the Sound when the pump is going out. In the small filter on the fuel filter housing, do you see any metal pieces? That filter is supposed to catch most of it. ( Which it don't, it spreads throughout the system quickly. ) If you don't see any, you are in luck and may be able to R&R the HP Fuel Pump and be back in business. If you see any sign of metal pieces, go ahead and clean out the system.

Hey all, just a little update for anyone in the future having this problem. Thanks everyone for the input. Both of my rigs are ddec 2s as well. Anyway, ended up being the fuel pump. I had a tiny pin hole in the line going from the water separator to the pump. Tried blowing air into it and didn’t leak but I tried sucking air and that’s when I found it. Disappointed it ruined my pump but think it was getting weak anyway. Thanks again for the help!
