I live in North Carolina. I’m needing my 12.7 Detroit rebuilt. Any suggestions on a mechanic around North Carolina and idea of a cost?

Suggest asking your chosen mechanic for a quote. There's dozens of different ways to rebuild an engine that will affect the overall cost.

I did receive a quote from my usual mechanic. But he seems to don’t need my business from his price. So I am looking elsewhere.

Cheaper isn’t always better. If you have a usual mechanic and know he does good work I wouldn’t chance it. Lots a guys can take a motor apart, a few more can get it together and make it run. Very few can do it right......

Most of those old engines are going to need a bull gear for overhaul and more than likely to have the block cut (liner protrusion). If your engine has over a million miles on it and never had a bull gear I would not even warranty it if you did not put in a bull gear. Also if you want to save future down time it would probably be best to remove the rear cover (on the front of engine) while you have the bull gear out and replace o-ring and apply new sealant. If you want an overhaul that is going to last and be done right you are probably looking at around 16K+ on a Detroit (not including turbo or injectors). If you want it cheap then you can probably get it done for 8K or less. High demand and low workforce is going to raise shop prices.
