12.7 Detroit need a new turbo (upgrade?), hauling light and best mpg?

    2033955595 leon smith... 2 friends of mine have gliders with detroits and both got a tune from leon, all of them are really happy. plenty of power, no smoke, low egts and good mileage.

    hi swaan. i finally got my truck tuned with leon . My impressions: mpg slightly lower ,was averaging 6.7/6.5 now is 6.3/6.4 BUT it runs way better and has way more pulling power than before and virtually no smoke. EGT in a hard pull about 800F/900F but if let the rpms drop it goes a little over. As you said it lacks the low end grunt no matter what .... a friend of mine has the same set up/tune but a 1.32 housing , we got the same load from nj to mi and trucks ran the same mpg/egt"s but his spools a little faster than mine but i was able to outpull his truck by little(leon said its due the 5915 injector i have). i will just install a different turbo and thats it...
    So, as much as i like it now, still i wouldn't compare it to my old cat(once you go cat, you know), i miss that thing so bad that im already looking for some options lol

    thats why i didnt spend the money with leon. he gave me good tips tho but i figured it was just gonna be way to much money. this is why i just swapped the 171702 for a K31 and im getting 7.4 7.8 with plenty of power. i can let it go as far as 1000 rpm and it will still pull with no lugging.

    next week im buying a 171702 1.32 a/r . you think a k31 1.28a/r would be a better turbo for this setup?

    I've been in touch with a guy that has been doing a lot testing on the dyno with various combinations on 12.7 detroits as far as turbos go. So far he has been having the best results with the 171701 on the 12.7 engines all the way up to 650hp. I have since sold my detroit so have not had a chance to try one .

    I agree, your 1.45 housing is too big for your application. If your going to buy a turbo then put a 171701 on there. You will gain a lot your useful torque down in the lower RPM range back. Also probably see a good increase in fuel mileage. Should spool very well.

    I know I know, everything and everyone will say 171702 but results and numbers don't lie. For a 12.7 the 171701 or k31 seems to out perform the 702 in almost every way.

    Ok, I'm putting on my flame suit now.!

    all my friends that got Leon's tune installed 171702 1.32a/r as recommended by him. Really hard to see egt's going past 900F on hard pulls . you think it will be the same with the 171701 or k31?

    This REALLY depends What Rpms approx that you Pull at and the avg altitude you run would you know ?

    This is because leon loves the 702. And honestly there's nothing wrong with it. 702 works great. But the 701 will work even better. It will have more bottom end torque and run cooler in the lower operating range then the 702.

    The dyno don't lie. What rpm are you running at mostly and where do you do most your hard pulling. What range.?
