I just paid $26,000 for an out-of-frame that lasted 17,000 miles! Now the mechanic is not standing by his work and says it was caused by an over-rev. However, I have a histogram on the truck that says the engine has never been over the 2120 rpms that the truck is rated for. I will most likely end up in court over this, anyone ever been through a similar incident? Any advice?

Engine make/model/serial #. Was it a dealer or independent shop? Was it a parts flaw or workmanship issue? How much time between rebuild and failure (in terms of weeks/months)? What was the scope of the rebuild (what was all replaced)? What part was the root cause of failure?

There are a suprising number of mechanics on the forum. The more info you can give, the better the answer we can give.

    2120 is considered over rev.

You gotta watch them R's going down hill. And be careful with the jakes.

Most of us don't go much over 1700. Maybe 1800 if your climbing hills.

Used to be a time if you hit the Jake's at 1800. You sucked the valves in.

How do you suck a valve in using the jakes? Never heard of that before.

Back in the day Jakes always worked best at 2100 per Cummins and Detroit. Cat always said to run the brakesaver at 2100. Never no problems. Above that around 2400 maybe.

My Detroit turns 2350 just fine. On fuel or on Jakes.

More info needs to be provided.

Cat had many 2300 RPM files for C-15/C15 and other truck engines.

My little baby Cat 3126B would run 2400 all day long everyday moving 33,000 gross down the road and get almost 500,000 between overhauls. I know apples and oranges right? Lol!
