If you were going from Flagstaff, AZ to LA, would you take I-40 and chug through those mountains, or would you ride the downhill roller coaster that is I-17 to the fairly flat lands that are I-10?

The route looks to be about 25 miles longer, but would that be justified in the amount of fuel saved by not climbing as many hills, or is it 6 of one, half dozen of another?

I'd take 40 for no other reason than to avoid the Banning scales

Thought I was the only one to do that... You worry a bit until you get to the 60, then you're free

Agree...after spending the last 7 years in the northwest i dont consider 40 hilly at all...

Which is why I avoid the northwest.

I avoid the northeast for entirely different reasons, of course.

from flagstaff it is nearly all down hill to needles then a a bit up to water road then mostly downhill again to LA

by the time you hit 17 in flagstaff you made it up most of the hills so i dont see any savings any way

    Mr. Mister Thanks this.

i've seen em chase a few down, stop a few. and usually have a full parking lot. sometimes they chase so many down, they actually flip the sign to close. i've gotten the get out of jail card free the last 4 times i went BY.

Assuming you meant Los Angeles and not Louisiana, you take 40 any day! Hills? You bypass those in California if you know where to look!!! Nice bypass too...
