Hello everyone, I've got a 2007 Western Star with a 14L 60 series and I'm getting it home now to put what's gonna be the 4th compressor on. I've replaced the governor with each one. And replaced the dryer not quite 2 years ago. Anyone else have trouble going thru compressors. Any idea what could be causing the compressor not making it a year and a half.

Maybe someone will have a better answer I’m not a mechanic. I had the regular 12.7 seems like the compressors were not the best designed. You could not buy a new one they only sold remanufactured ones I believe. I had them go bad and they would pump oil in entire air system. I believe the head or the head gasket would go bad and leak. If you noticed it could be fixed. Seem like they told me the leaking oil was from the rings going bad and they just wear out plus they were all rebuilt never as good as a new one. It been a long time since I had S60 so someone might have better info.

Why are you replacing the compressor?

I'm loosing coolant and have lots of bubbles if you put the coolant reservoir overflow tube in a cup of water. First thought head gasket or cracked head, but after some diagnosis the compressor is pressuring up the coolant system and that why I'm loosing coolant. I was in Texarkana last night and was going to go ahead and top it off with water before I set in for a get'er done ride to Indy to dump my load of scrap aluminum so I could get it home (30 miles west of Effingham) and when I went to take the cap off it was gonna shoot to the moon! So I bled off all 3 air reservoirs then went to take the cap off and the pressure was gone. So I topped off the reservoir and pulled the compressor discharge line that goes to the dryer off the compressor and fired it up. Let it run for probably 20 minutes and not a bubble one out of the overflow tube in a cup of water. So I reconnected the line to the compressor and put the overflow tube back in the water. As soon as it built enough air pressure to shut the engine fan off i got a few bubbles and then when the compressor unloader popped off the bubbles went crazy and started pushing out coolant. I trucked it up and stopped at Mt. Vernon, IL to check and top off the coolant and same deal, had to bleed the air tanks to get the cap off the reservoir. But I got her back home so I'll tear into it tomorrow.

Removing the discharge line and draining the tanks will have no affect on your coolant resevoir or overflow. That is not a way to diagnose a compressor in that scenario.

To diagnose, you would have to leave the compressor in an unloaded state. Basically, once it pops the dryer, it's unloaded until the air pressure drops enough to start building again.

Or, you can put air directly to the unloader port.

FYI, I've worked on my share of 60's, and have found none where the compressor is causing your issue.

    What truck is this in?

It's in a 07 Western Star. And if the compressor has a head gasket blown or a cracked heat where the compression is getting into the cooling jacket draining the air tanks and removing the pressure line from the compressor is going to diagnose the problem. The compressed air is going to take the path of least resistance so it's going to push the air out the discharge line until the air system reaches whatever the point is psi wise in the air system that it's just as easy to push the air thru the head gasket or cracked in the head on the compressor. When the air system pressure drops to the point that it's less resistance to push the air out the discharge on the compressor that's what it is going to do. I can run the truck all day without the discharge line on the compressor and never get a bubble out the overflow on the coolant reservoir, but as soon as I hook the line to the compressor and it builds pressure in the air system i start getting bubbles, so the compressor is pressuring up the cooling system. Common physics! And I've had 2 of the best mechanics in my area that my diagnosis is spot on.

Maybe I’m wrong but that one of the problems with the air compressor on S60 is the head gasket on the air compressor would leak or the head would I go bad and it will pump air directly into the coolant system. The coolant hose goes right into the top of air compressor head assembly.

the repair was simple but a couple hundred dollars with labor at Detroit Diesel shop. You could just get another rebuild air compressor for like $800.

or the rings when bad like it did on me probably 2 time and it pumped engine oil into the air lines and tanks.

Lmao! I would hate to have my truck worked on by you! Put a new compressor on yesterday and the problem is solved. Glad I could teach you something, but truly I get the feeling you might ought to just keep holding the steering wheel, because it's obvious you don't know your way around the tool box very well!

Yeah it's a terrible design, but it is what it is. Just thankful that I have more mechanical knowledge than Ol' Big Road Skateboard lol!
