Hello,
I have a 2007 international 7400, when I turn the key on all gauges except the water temp will return to zero. The water temp will move to the maximum and stop on the back side of the pin. Anyone one have any advice or suggestions? Or is the cluster toast?
thanks

The gauge could be toast, but it will read what the engine is telling it. If the engine coolant temp sensor is reading wrong, and sending the wrong information, the gauge will therefore read wrong. If it is maxing out over temp even though the engine is physically still cold, there are a couple of things to check. If the coolant temp sensor is faulty, or over temp, the Check Engine light or Warn Engine lights should be on. The other issue is possibly corrupted body controller and/or cluster. Try a quick reboot. To do this simply disconnect all cab battery power for a couple minutes and retest. To rule out a faulty cluster, if you have access to another similar truck, try swapping cluster to see how a test cluster responds.

Would a faulty sensor cause the gauge not to do its initial sweep and return to zero when key is first turned on? All other gauges go back to zero and then to there values. This one if you remove the pin will keep going in a clockwise direction and it doesn’t move after the truck is started and warmed up. There is no warning or check engine lights or codes for this showing.
I will check out your suggestions as well. -
The cluster gets its engine information from the J1939 data link. If the temp sensor was faulty you would have a check engine light on. Disconnected the power for a couple minutes and reconnect if that does not fix it then the gauge is faulty.
