Have a leak in the top seal of my power steering unit right below the U joint. Any ideas on cost to repair/replace seal versus just replacing with rebuilt unit?

I've done mine, but I have a ZF steering gear so it might be a little different. But basically you take the steering shaft off and then the 4 bolts that hold the top cover on. with the cover off you can drive out the old seal and install a new one. If anyone has the ZF steering gear the input shaft seal kit is part number 85112469 ($140 which is insane, but way cheaper than a steering gear). I think TRW might be more common so you might be able to find the seal aftermarket, I couldn't with the ZF.

The volvo kit for this repaire is around cdn $40. It is easy to do yourself. The pinch bolt is 16mm and 17mm, gently pry up the steering shaft, the cover , that the rubber seal you shown, then the actual seal is shown. There are two ways to remove the seal , drill two small hole and use two screws and side cutters to take the seal out or rage and pressure of the pump to blow the seal out. Use method one. Make sure you keep everything clean - all the time. Use lots of the grease that comes with the kit when you replace seal and cover cap. Hour to hour and half. Easy.
