Also optimum cruising rpm in 9th gear is 1250. Halfway between shifting points. 8th gear is 12 and so on down the line.

Note self Do not lease. Do not run a truck has been turned down.

    milskired Thanks this.

Well yeah you use progressive shifting to get out of low range. As quickly as possible.

In the top holes, where he was asking, 1500-1550 upshift and 1150-1200 downshift.

There is a guy, Henry Albert, that has a lifetime average on his Cascadia (SCR and DPF equipped) of somewhere in the 8.6 mpg range, documented. I think he has somewhere between 180,000 and 200,000 miles on the truck now. Freightliner has him in their "slice of life" promotional program and he runs a blog regarding how the truck is doing. He has mostly been running it around 65 mph. For a while recently, he dropped the speed down to 60 average just to see how much it would improve and he busted 9's off and on.

One thing I do know, you have got to have the ideal tranny and rear end ratios to put any engine in the ideal spot for how you are running to get the most out of it. If one slows down or speeds up, they may or may not see any major improvement in mpg, if the truck isn't geared properly. And it is a rare situation when a fleet gets the specs exactly right.

On the floating or clutch issue. Over 30 years I guess I have molded myself into a hybrid style. I use both floating and clutching styles, depending on what is going on at the time, the load and terrain, or just how I am feeling at the moment. I like both methods.

I would think your glider should be able to do 8s in the right conditions Cow. Those old 12.7 DDs are fuel sippers.

Sure hope so. Having ported/coated exhaust manifold and borg warner turbo with a blanket put on this week on it, along with Walker megaflows on the stacks. When I pick it up, I also have a Fleet Air Filter sitting here to put in before I head out with it to work. As with any new truck, will have to get it settled down and figure out exactly how it likes to run. It is getting a full grill guard on the front, so that will cost me a couple of tenths on mpg. But that is better than having Bambi's head stuck in my engine. I might not worry so much about it, but I run a lot of two lanes in the upper midwest and I have busted up a few deer with the grill guard I have on my present truck.

Kinda getting edgy about getting my hands on it. It has been a long time since I put the order in for it back in late February. Good thing the one I have now has done pretty good while I have been waiting.

I prefer the hybrid style shifting as well... All depends on what's going on.

I have seen you multiple times out on I-80 between Des Moines and Iowa 80 TS. That lane is pretty good on the MPG depending on heading east or west and what the wind is doing. I can do 6.5-7 at 62 with 45K of steel on my TMC truck(379 short hood). I do it on a normal basis, atleast that run from Portage Indiana to Des Moines.

I have a 2012 Cascadia with a DD15. Not quite 23,000 miles at this point, obviously not completely broken in. I'm a lease operator with Swift and my truck has the "standard" Swift drivetrain for a DD15 equiped Cascadia, 3.42 gears with a 9-speed and 275/80-22.5s. We pull 53' dry vans at Swift, some with aero skirts, most without.

I upshift @ 1500 in 5th-8th gear. I downshift between 1100-1000 depending on the hill, weight, and conditions. I keep the front of the trailer between 47-48" from the back of the cab depending on weight. My average to date is 7.35 mpg. I routinely get 8+ with light loads, 7-7.4 when I'm over 70,000, and my worse has been 6.1 near 80,000 trying to rush a beer load west bound into the rockies. I've also seen low 6s running I-77 north bound out of NC through VA & WV when heavy.
