I just ordered a Uniden 980 SSB bearcat. Looking to replace the stock antenna on the Peterbilt. The governor on my truck is pretty low and sometimes when I'm ####-chatting with another driver they'll go way out of range because I can't keep up with them LOL. What is a good antenna recommendation to utilize in the stock location on these trucks? At the time I'm not looking to add an amplifier just want solid system.

If you want a solid system then put in your own coaxial along with a good antenna, I like the Wilson 2000 or a Francis.

Will I have to cut the antenna a good bit for it to work for my truck?

    Where is the antenna mounted?

Back of cab? Then it requires a top load antenna.

    If so, you want:

    1). 5’ Skipshooter
    2). SS spring
3). TOP GUN TEC Mount stud

This will get above a van by 4” plus. I’ve had no problem with it 90k miles.

    You should also add:

4). RM ITALY KL203 amp that will run with the radio off the 15A factory binding posts.

    75W for $75 off eBay

The final piece of gear is:

    5). WEST MOUNTAIN RADIO CLEARSPEAKER

has variable digital signal filtration (as used on high dollar Amateur radios) to clarify weak signals. Perfect for SSB also. $199 (this is a life-changer it’s so good).

This setup will outperform every $500 Big Radio out there with the 980 you have.

I ran RG8X Coax thru an existing hole in sleeper and draped it high up to the factory cubby hole.

I’m currently running a UNIDEN 885 Hybrid CB/Scanner as shown.

Set SWR with separate meter, plug in the rest and go. No need for tech to mess with anything unless he has — and can use — an antenna analyzer.

Then stick it in a closet. Because a center-load won’t work worth beans there, unless

1). You are ALWAYS bobtail; and,

2). The other party to a conversation is ALWAYS behind you.

    The 5’ Skipshooter is $25.
