Sorry for the repost in a different thread location, but I am new here & was just told to post my question here. Learning as I go I guess. Once again....sorry!!
Here's the situation:
Have a CAT 3406e. It was running and once in a while there was a few puffs of white from the exhaust pipes.
Yesterday, started it and the white smoke was SO bad you couldn't even see across the yard.
I read on here somewhere about removing the camshaft sensor...adjusting the green tip..installing withOUT the shim...removing sensor again and reinstall shim & sensor.
Well, 1st of all; after removing sensor found it to be a BLACK tip & not the fore-mentioned GREEN (and the black tip did NOT adjust/move). Went ahead and reinstalled with NO shim...uninstalled & reinserted shim & sensor.
Attempted to start the truck as I did yesterday to see if there was still white smoke and now the truck will NOT turn over AT ALL!
Does anyone have ANY clues/ideas as to what may have taken place during the removal and reinsertion....AND with the white smoke situation that started it all?

sounds like a blown head gasket to me i just went though the same thing new head gasket running fine now
-
1 The head gasket is blown allowing coolant to enter the cylinder
2 The cylinder head is cracked allowing coolant to enter the cylinder
3 The liner flange has cracked allowing coolant to enter the cylinder
The white smoke you're seeing is the coolant being burnt. The reason the engine will not turn over now is the cylinder is full of coolant.........it's hydro-locked -
Exactly what Mr.Haney said you got water getting into a cylinder....

Yesterday hubby replaced the cam sensor and it started right up & has started every time since.
When running down the road it will sputter/miss out & white smoke between 1000-1200 RPM, but seems like if cruise is set or it's above 1200 RPM it's fine. Also, while it is sitting in the yard idling and missing out he can plug in the pro-link & it will instantly stop missing out & smoking and it will idle normal.
Anyone ever heard of this or had similar happen to them? Anyone have any ideas?
The Pro-Link shows no error codes either.
Perplexed is an unserstatement!! -
White smoke at start up can also be caused by Fuel leakining past the lower injector O Ring and become most prominent at start up displaying large amounts of white smoke.
The Hydraulic lock can be caused by the fuel leaking down and sitting ontop of the piston. Depends on what position the engine stops at and what cylinder the injector has the faulty O Ring.
Leaving the engine sit for several hours and it will start as the fuel has leaked past the rings.
This can cause the engine to also miss- fire and also allow Compression Gas to enter the fuel rail which will also effect the way the engine runs. Aerates the Fuel in the Head Fuel Rail.
When replacing the O rings ensure you use/replace all 3 Seals on each injector and ensure that there is no reminence of the old tip seal left in the Injector Cup.
Usually a sign that you have a bad Injector O Ring is the engine wont start instantly and go straight to Idle RPM and smoke discolouration at start up.
Usually you will need to crank for a longer than normal time and when the engine does start it will hunt for a second or two before it finds its Idle RPM. -
The reason Pro-Link shows No errors is its not an electrical fault so it all makes sense. I Think!!
Pete379Cat Thanks this. -
Can make it smoke & miss-out/sputter by messing with the foot feed. Also, it is not losing & has not lost any coolant what-so-ever. in 4-5 hours of starting & idling as well as 250-300 miles.

Pete379Cat Thanks this.

Mine was smoking white at start up then would stop after engine would warm up, it happen to be a mixture of coolant and fuel leaking into cylinder didn't start losing power until it became pretty bad.. I scored a piston, and cat shop in boise couldn't figure it out with their electronics
