Because the performance difference of 75K or 80K is negligible.

The Detroit 12 I drive handles it very differently. I mean maybe the first second it's the same but it very quickly adjusts.

As for the op, your "friend" is simply a poor driver. We use the exact same trucks to haul 80k lbs as 105k lbs The only different is a dump valve is installed for the 3rd trailer axle and it's registered for 105K.
You simply need to learn not to tailgate, I mean your friend needs to learn to not tailgate.

I could feel the difference between roughly 7k ... 77k is always gonna pull a tad harder than 70k .... But most likely "george" wouldve hit the car no matter his weight

tommymonza and Rubber duck kw Thank this.

Sometimes you can tell how heavy your truck feels depending on how the truck was loaded, either heavy on the drives or on the trailer tandems. For me anything 40,000 pounds and up,regardless of what’s on the BOL is grounds for me to CAT Scale it. If it’s over the 80,000 pound gross limit, that SOB is going back to be reworked, especially if I’m in an area where DOT scale houses are likely to be open-even with the pandemic!
I actually go thru the trouble of calculating how much fuel I have or can take on(if applicable),the weight of the APU(we have a 400 pounds weight credit certification from the Feds). Sometimes it takes multiple times to balance the truck out,but I do it regardless (I get reimbursed for scales anyway).

And you thought weight and balance calculations were just for aircraft!!;)

Oh, I'm not saying one can't tell the difference. I'm just saying a modern auto has nothing to do with it.
I almost always haul less then 10k in the box, and a good bit of time less than 5k . I can easily tell the difference between a "full load", a 1/2 load and empty.
