I'm betting the truck is pre-ecm. -
yep, it has an ecm, and it has power
-
Since it was starting and running just fine before it sat unused for months, I would consider that the ECM is seeing low voltage during cranking and causing this problem. If the starter is pulling all available voltage during cranking, the ECM will not respond correctly.
-
what engine?
-
It is an N14.
We charged up the battery and tested voltage to the ECM, but we did not test it during cranking. We're thinking of re-charging it (it's been a while) then having the battery tested. Is it more likely to be a battery failure, or an ECM failure? -
Crazy thought. Can you pull a couple of batteries from an operational truck, plug them in, and then try it? The current batteries might be old, and drained so low that they just won't hold a charge no matter what you do. Had a similar problem on one of my personal vehicles awhile back, and that's what fixed it.
If this works, well...it's always the stupid stuff we don't see, right? If it doesn't, well...sorry. It's just an idea from what worked for me in the past. -
I would refresh the batteries and check all connections including grounds.

Two of the 4 batteries were tested and were pumping strong. Was really hoping that was the problem...
