    98 kenworth w9 n14 cummins

Had an issue with the motor burning a bunch of oil. Found oil in the #6 exhaust port. Torn down the top end to which we found the head gasket was leaking and a bent valve. Heads have been completely gone through, new valve, decked, etc.

My question is should I just do the full overhaul? Nothing on the lower end is bad, pistons look good, sleeves are fine ect.

If the rest of the engine is up to snuff, put it back together with what you have, you should be good to go.

Many upon many Cummins have gone years and miles with just one head being serviced or replaced. There is a reason why they were originally designed with 3 individual removable heads like that.

I went cheap on an OH once. And the motor only lasted another 6600 miles, and we were back where we started. Didn’t make that mistake again. I’d do it right, not twice. Down time is irretrievable, and 2 shop bills will cost you more than 1. If you’re doing the work yourself, taking it apart twice will take longer than once too…….

To put it into perspective if this was the late 90s or early 2000s and that engine was still under warranty Cummins would fix the damage and kick it out the door. If you wanted a full overhaul done at that time it'd be out of pocket minus what warranty covered.
