I've got a 99 cat C12. It's pushing oil into the coolant. Started off fairly slow and manageable. Like a oil cooler going bad. I was trying to limp it home and before I got there it went from using a little bit of oil every couple hundred miles, to 4 gallons low. I refilled it. Drove 30 mi and it was three and a half gallons low. A local mechanic where I broke down at said he tested the oil cooler and it was good. Any other suggestions? I still got to drag it home and look at it. Just trying to think outside the box

    Few things it could be.

Water pumps on those C12s are known to the point of notoriety have a seal go out and leak oil into the coolant. Next could be a bad head gasket. I THINK there was an updated gasket seal recall at one point? I know when i worked for a company that had 2 dozen C12s every single one od them went in at the same time for new gaskets.

Finally could be a bad liner. Check the waterpump first. Then if that wasnt the issue pressure the system and have them pull the pan to see which hole if any coolant is dripping down. If coolant pouring out of a cylinder odds are theres your liner. Or you will be able to find the break in the head gasket.

Im not super experinced with the C12s but i do remimber those being the number one issues. That said....the above comment is the most correct C12s are pretty underpowered in many tasks and a C15 is a better all around engine. But if your stuck or happy with what ya got my advice will at least send you in the right general direction.

Also make sure to clean the system really good and just replace the hoses. Even if you clean them up once you get oil in the coolant them hoses nearly always fail shortly afterwards in my experince. Cheaper to do it while they are pulled apart anyway....plus no risk of dumping your coolant on the road.

I talked to a bunch of smart folks and everyone says the local mechanic is crazy and put a cooler on it and go. I was just looking for other options as to where it could be coming from.

Thanks for all the response, if any other ideas pop up please post them and I'll keep checking back.
