On behalf of The Truckers' Report and truckers everywhere, particularly company drivers, I wish to address the general public here.

If you see something, please do NOT hesitate to say something. If you notice something that's an obvious case of negligence, carelessness, or outright stupidity, make the call to the company.

Here's the reason I'm making this post. I witnessed a linehaul driver enter the yard this morning pulling double trailers, and noticed the safety chains on the converter dolly still in the carrying basket on the dolly and not connected to the bar on the back of the lead trailer. I pointed it out to the driver, not to shame him, but just to make him aware of it, hoping it would send something of a chill down his spine thus making any potential problem correct itself. He nodded in agreement and I left it at that.

A short time later when I mentioned it to another linehaul driver, I was met with the following jaw dropping story.

According to the second driver and later corroborated by a third, the first driver was witnessed leaving the terminal one night with double trailers loaded with load racks, and the doors on BOTH trailers were OPEN with NO LOAD SECUREMENT WHATSOEVER. The third driver told me he tried to get ahold of him on the company two-way radio to warn him of this with no luck, so he called the terminal whereupon the outbound dispatcher even tried calling his phone, STILL being unable to get ahold of him.

If it were just a matter of the safety chain thing, it may not be such a big deal, but this guy apparently has a history of this. A driver like that is going to kill somebody sooner or later, and the motoring public would be doing the GOOD drivers at these companies a big favor by not hesitating to MAKE THE CALL when seeing something like this. WE don't need the extra attention from the law that GOOD drivers at a given company will inevitably be subject to due to the negligence of another, and hopefully you can assist us in the much needed weeding out of the bad apples among us.

    Thank you in advance.

Don't bother to call the name on my door ( I'll tell you to go fly a kite) and probably with some 4 letter words .

I don't need a baby sister especially from the general motoring pubic......(mostly jerkoffs)

M6 Did you say anything about this nit wit to management ?

Sure did, but middle management often has their head in the clouds on such matters when brought to their attention by other drivers thanks to the chronic complainers among us.

Also, I take it you're an owner-op, so this bear in mind that this wasn't directed at you.

Frankly, I for one can do without undue scrutiny every time I get near a scale thanks be to a tanking of the company's safety stats due to the likes of the aforementioned "nitwit".

No, but due to our "peer review" system it's nearly impossible to get fired for anything other than missing time or failing a drug test without it looking like harassment.

I called in a driver last winter for some similar BS. Dip #### took off from the yard with not one chain or strap on a very expensive piece of construction equipment. I guess he figured it was a waste of time since he was "just driving across town."

Are there pictures of the improperly secured loads?

I am focused on watching traffic around me for erratic behavior and trust that you guys take pride in your work to do a good job. You are the most qualified to police yourselves.

When I see a blatant violation I dont bother with management. I will contact the companies safety department. The may only put it as a note on the driver and leave it at that until something happens. Then again, it depends on the company.

I had a trainer whom was night driving with CR England. A passing driver saw that the trainer had his laptop going when driving down the road. The 4 wheeler thought for certain the trainer was watching nude movies. The trainer was on the phone with the company for 5 minutes or so explaining it was only CoPilot on his laptop. I thought it was hillarious just the same, that a 4 wheeler presumed he was watching porn.

Yeah if we could hack these elogs to have pr0n screen savers? That'd be great.

BTW, I don't have anywhere near as much a problem with elogs as I do with screen brightness at night. Even turned all the way down, it's too distracting at 3 am in the dark of the PA turnpike. And the boredom of the lonely highway makes you WANT to watch the darn thing. Watching your ETA numbers waver rather than watch the shoulder for deer.

For my own safety and sanity, I just started hanging a towel over it.

And don't get me started on watching 4 wheelers shoot past me with their high beams on and their nav screens brighter than an RKO cinema. I don't know how they can see at night at all.

You can be assured that there are many OTR idiots as there are four wheeler idiots. There was a time that highway truckers were highly respected. Todays truckers need to step back a bit and take some restock of their "profession".

In my final year as an OTR trucker I felt like following some of these new young guns into the truck stops and reaming them out.

One instance was on the NJ TP where five semis where nose to tail and not allowing anyone to change lanes nor letting traffic merge from the on ramps. Do any of these new drivers understand what happens when a 30 ton load needs to dynamite all 10 wheels at 70 mph?.
