If you are looking for a good certified CDL program, take a look at the trucking program at Isothermal Community College. I was so pleased with the instruction my wife went in after me to get her CDL.

The school is located in between Asheville, NC, Charlotte, NC & Greenville SC. It is a PTDI certified program and costs $3575. We did 124 hours of class work, 24 hours of range driving, and 20 hours over-the-road for a total of 168 hours.

The instruction is very good and when you are out on the range/road it is one on one- just you in a truck with your instructor. Some of the instructors are also state testers so they really help prepare you to pass your tests and let you know all along the way what is expected of you to pass and get your CDL. The people who provide the instruction really like their job. My main instructor had over 5 million miles and said he does it to give back to the industry and pass the torch to the next generation. Running up and down the mountains out on the highway was my favorite part of the course.

My class had 8 students when we started. Two dropped the first week because they figured out it was not for them. Out of the other 6 students who remained (5 males, 1 female) 3 were offered jobs about half way through the course, 1 was going to work with her husband who is an owner operator, 1 got a job the week he took his CDL exam, and I have yet to apply for any jobs but plan to start this week.

Anyway, there are folks out there who are wondering, where can I find a great school or is this for me? Believe me, I was wondering the same thing this past December and I am so happy I found this particular school. You can do it if you have the desire and set your mind to it!

Yes, it's nice if you have the money stashed away! I don't so I guess I'll be at the mercy of a "free" school.

Don't wait too long or you'll be coughing up money to take a refresher course. Just from reading on this site, anything past thirty days or so and companies will want you to take a refresher.

Hey Traveler, some of the students were getting grants to come to class for free through some state agency. If you are truly interested call the school and ask about it and I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.
